Keep criticising Matt Mullenweg. But please don't throw those of us who have worked for him and on the #WordPress project in various capacities under the bus.
Many of us not only dislike the guy, but have been hurt by him in one way or another.
But for some of us, WP is our livelihood.
Self-host your website outside of WordPress.com. There's plenty of hosting providers out there who support the open source WordPress ecosystem without involving MM or Automattic Inc.
As the US is getting active online, I just want to add that there is no "CEO of WordPress".
WP exists for the most part outside the confines of the services, management and contributions from the corporate entity named Automattic Inc. that uses the WordPress brand for it's web hosting services and owns Tumblr.
I used to work for that company just like many others. Now I consult in that space. Matt will never be my boss again and that is a good thing.
Whelp. A former #Automattic employee and current #Tumblr product person both give weight to the rumor that #ActivityPub for Tumblr has been shelved. Sounds like it comes down to finances and not seeing a ton of value coming from it.
It’s a bummer, but not surprising. Tumblr is still very much in the red and this is an expensive project with, at best, little to no direct benefit to the bottom line.
Ever since I decided to start pulling away from #Twitter (which I affectionately call Xitter), I have been trying out different social media sites. #hivesocial#threads#bluesky#tumblr#countersocial#instagram#facebook
I've gone back and forth, trying to make one my home but seeing each site's limitations. The only one that has come close to being what I want and need is #Mastodon. I can set it up to see what I want to see, but also explore and discover new things as well.
Apparently, Tumblr's CEO stepped on his crank and outed himself as a TERF. We does not abide the TERF. No we doesn't.
If you're fleeing #Tumblr and checking out the #fediverse, welcome! I hope you find a home here. You have quite a few options with #Mastodon, #Miskey, #Firefish#Sharkey (I'm posting this from sharkey.world), and the practically thousands of instances within those. Each have their own flavor and features, so don't feel you have to settle on one off the bat. It's not unusual to see new users sign up on one instance, then eventually move to another, then another before they find the community that fits them best.
Looking for something more "bloggy"? Bear Blog and Pika are two services offering simple blogging tools with an emphasis on "small blogging". They are unassociated with the major blogging platforms and offer a fresh alternative to them.
Talking about #retrocomputing things... Here a program I wrote on September 2015 with my first computer. That Commodore Vic-20 is now 40 years old, has 3.5 Kb of RAM and last time I tried it was still working :-) #creativeCoding#tumblr#petscii#basic#asciiart#8bit
In lieu of #Tumblr being talked about again, just wanted to let everyone know I'm still around.
Have had to slow my development as the family caught COVID back in August and I was let go from my job shortly after that so I've been focusing on finding new employment.
But I have no expectations of stopping work on Swanye, esp. once I find a job again.
Just wanted an update so it isn't just silence; this account continues to periodically get followers and I'm always glad people are interested!
After Matt's transphobic tirade fresh in everyone's minds, this is a cue to get off Tumblr and hosted WordPress ASAP, but I'll wait and see if it also applies to WordPress.org self-hosting service as well before getting off there as well.
This is hard. My #Tumblr blog has been a main focus of my life for at least a decade. I’ve posted thousands of posts, almost all original photos, and the blog has over 100,000 followers. It felt like the one worthwhile thing I was continually doing and to delete it seems incredibly painful. But leaving it in a place that has partnered with #Midjourney feels too much like consent. How do I parse this?
Even though the shift is small, it's big enough. It's incredible watching the Fediverse grow; first with the Birdsite flocking to #Mastodon, and now with #Lemmy and #Kbin growing in popularity (I only recently learned about Kbin)... this type of growth is enough to kickstart more people coming over here.
I'm looking forward to #Tumblr maybe joining sometime soon (oh, the memes you can see!), maybe some prominent Twitch people will try out #Owncast, maybe I can get some of my family over here...
So if anyone thought the entire #Automattic#AIPartnership shanda was going to reflect badly on Automattic's other products, after reading through dozens of Toots and blog posts, the answer is a resounding YES.
…I noticed that they gave shoutouts to #Mastodon & #WordPress (#Tumblr was strangely ignored) as well as credited #Misskey for their quote implementation (even #Firefish received an honorable mention).
I do wonder how many Threads users have activated ActivityPub on their account‽
My feed's been full of pornocalypse lately, so I went back to look at Matt Mullenweg's "Why "Go Nuts, Show Nuts" Doesn’t Work in 2022" that he wrote to explain why the ballyhooed Tumblr porn "unbanning" was a search-invisibility nothingburger.
Well, guess what you see if you follow that link now? "You'll need to be on Tumblr to see this...."
Fuck that. It needs to be on the open web for research and commentary:
[News] Pro-China influence campaign pushed talking points across more than 50 websites (www.nbcnews.com)
Facebook said Tuesday it has identified a sprawling online propaganda effort: a pro-China campaign that had a presence on more than 50 websites....
