Whenever I explain my at Google into mobile text editing, I'm usually met with blank stares or a slightly hostile "Everyone can edit text on their phones, right? What's the problem?"

Text editing on mobile isn't ok. It's actually much worse than you think, an invisible problem no one appreciates. I wrote this post so you can understand why it's so important.

"Do you want to _?"

  • "Yes"
  • "Maybe later".

To whoever designs this style of interface: be an adult and accept rejection, don't be like a abusive boyfriend that doesn't take "no" for an answer. It's perfect fine to have the "Maybe Later" option as long as there is a "No". Forcing people who don't want to do something to say "Maybe later" isn't a good look. It makes your whole product seem creepy as fuck with no respect for consent.

Maybe later? Maybe go fuck yourself.

India has officially outlawed nine types of , including saying "Hurry, only X amount left;" adding "processing fees;" adding dire language to opt-out buttons ("No, I'd rather not protect my purchase"); forcing people to agree to a EULA; forcing people to call a phone number to unsubscribe; using confusing opt-out language ("No, don't unsubscribe me"); blending ads into editorial content; and forcing people to click "remind me later" every day. https://bootcamp.uxdesign.cc/dark-patterns-are-now-illegal-in-india-6b3c35c5ce50

I collect these. I call them "design in the wild" where end users fix design mistakes on their own. It's a bit shocking how often this happens. Think of how bad it has to be to reach this point.

Every hashtag on every post on every platform should ALWAYS be pascal case (a.k.a. camel case). I made this to illustrate how screenreaders read hashtags depending on whether they are lowercase or pascal case.

It’s a small thing that all of us can do to build a more inclusive, accessible internet for all. Please take the time to use pascal case.

Let's be clear about this: Accessibility is not a feature. Inaccessibility is a bug.

If your software or website is inaccessible, that renders it unusable to the end user. It is broken, in other words.

Please god, why does this happen every single day of my life?

Paste between apps should not honor formatting by default. Of course there should be an option to 'paste with formatting'

How this pattern became the default is baffling

Video showing me copying some text from Wikipedia and pasting it into a doc with the original formatting which is completely useless.

I'm assuming it has potential for at least the #UX and #QA folk

Okay, here is my take on Nielsen's latest post.

"Accessibility has failed as a way to make computers usable for disabled users." Thus begins a newsletter by Jakob Nielsen. And had it not been written by someone a great many people take seriously in the UX industry I likely would just have dismissed it. But seeing how harmful I consider the post to potentially be, I would like to nip this in the bud. My reflection is that the published post is misleading, self-contradictory and underhanded. I'll walk you through the whole of it and provide my commentary and reasoning. 👇

🆕 blog! “I can't use my number pad for 2FA codes”

This has to be the most infuriating bug report I've ever submitted. I went to type in my 2FA code on a website - but no numbers appeared on screen. Obviously, I was an idiot and had forgotten to press the NumLock button. D'oh! I toggled it on and typed again. No numbers appeared. I […]

"Don't make me think" is only half of the story.

It's a #UX sin to assume that your app is the most important thing in your user's world, and add to their cognitive load unnecessarily. But sometimes the user is focused on your product. They don't want a low-touch, automagic experience. They want to be in control. Let them.

Don't make me think - but let me think.

This is part of why "reduce friction" is misleading. Friction is texture. Without it, there's nothing to grab on to

I did some #UX consulting for a non profit in Nairobi a while ago, and in addition to various UX stuff, I suggested they use a #PWA (a simple cached website) instead of an app.

I talked to them this morning. They shipped it and are thrilled. It's SO much smaller than an app, a critical issue in rural Kenya, and it's significantly easier to get people to find and install it.

So exciting when people discover the value of the standard, unfussy web

I’m so disappointed in the design of the new Apple Sports app, which does not degrade gracefully on smaller screen sizes, like my iPhone SE2.

Apple used to get this stuff right.
