Whenever I explain my #research at Google into mobile text editing, I'm usually met with blank stares or a slightly hostile "Everyone can edit text on their phones, right? What's the problem?"
Text editing on mobile isn't ok. It's actually much worse than you think, an invisible problem no one appreciates. I wrote this post so you can understand why it's so important. https://jenson.org/text #UXDesign#UX
India has officially outlawed nine types of #UX#DarkPatterns, including saying "Hurry, only X amount left;" adding "processing fees;" adding dire language to opt-out buttons ("No, I'd rather not protect my purchase"); forcing people to agree to a EULA; forcing people to call a phone number to unsubscribe; using confusing opt-out language ("No, don't unsubscribe me"); blending ads into editorial content; and forcing people to click "remind me later" every day. https://bootcamp.uxdesign.cc/dark-patterns-are-now-illegal-in-india-6b3c35c5ce50
If you're looking for a free, open-source alternative to the Font Awesome icon library you should check the MIT-licensed Phosphor icon library. Clean designs, over 7k icons 🤯
I collect these. I call them "design in the wild" where end users fix design mistakes on their own. It's a bit shocking how often this happens. Think of how bad it has to be to reach this point. #ux
Friends. I’m looking for work. I’m a UX designer/researcher, information architect, and UI designer/developer. I bring over two decades of experience to the table. I’m also an accessibility/usability expert.
If you have a need I’d love to talk with you. If you know folks, I’d love a boost. Thank you! 🙌🏻
"Accessibility has failed as a way to make computers usable for disabled users." Thus begins a newsletter by Jakob Nielsen. And had it not been written by someone a great many people take seriously in the UX industry I likely would just have dismissed it. But seeing how harmful I consider the post to potentially be, I would like to nip this in the bud. My reflection is that the published post is misleading, self-contradictory and underhanded. I'll walk you through the whole of it and provide my commentary and reasoning. 👇
This has to be the most infuriating bug report I've ever submitted. I went to type in my 2FA code on a website - but no numbers appeared on screen. Obviously, I was an idiot and had forgotten to press the NumLock button. D'oh! I toggled it on and typed again. No numbers appeared. I […]
I did some #UX consulting for a non profit in Nairobi a while ago, and in addition to various UX stuff, I suggested they use a #PWA (a simple cached website) instead of an app.
I talked to them this morning. They shipped it and are thrilled. It's SO much smaller than an app, a critical issue in rural Kenya, and it's significantly easier to get people to find and install it.
So exciting when people discover the value of the standard, unfussy web
New blog post on user support frustration, its causes, and how we could build the "infrastructure of equanimity" in #opensource, including ideas for potential cross-project tools & practices.
Shout-outs to @davidism, Heidi Waterhouse, @offby1, @jacob, Nicole Harris, @bernard, + @georgia for work & conversations that I built on in this piece.
less laden with unnecessary racist & colonial baggage from the Enlightenment
already established within #UX conversations by the website https://www.deceptive.design/about-us , who prudently changed their name due to this whole set of concerns.
Thanks everyone for considering this small-but-important wording improvement.
Now back to doing whatever awesomeness you were doing!
@pluralistic brilliantly clarifying our modern world for us, as usual:
We’re nowhere near the point where an AI can do your job, but we’re well past the point where your boss can be suckered into firing you and replacing you with a bot that fails at doing your job.
