I'm 59. When I was born, segregation existed, interracial marriage was illegal and women were not allowed to have credit cards in their own names until I was 11 years old. CIVIL RIGHTS ARE A NEW THING.

@StillIRise1963 I am old enough to remember being on a school trip bus to the old Honolulu Zoo, and seeing a touristy couple holding hands walking down Kalaukaua Avenue. A white girl from the American South who transferred in, loudly announced to our busload of non-white mixed race local kids that a Black man and a white woman together was an abomination against God's law and the laws of man. Miscegenation was wrong, she said. When we all protested in an uproar, she retreated to "I'm only concerned about their kids. Mongrel kids. I feel sorry for their kids."
This was before Loving.
The evil side wants to undo Loving.
We won't go back. We won't go back.

@StillIRise1963 I’m 65. Domestic violence was considered a family matter. No one was prosecuted for it, women were told by their various churches to do better and endure.
Rape was impossible to prosecute. There was no Miranda Law. No fault divorce did not exist. My mother had to get written permission from her father to go to college.
Abortion was illegal at every stage. Segregation was the norm. Civil rights did not exist.
They want us to go back to that time.

“Again we have deluded ourselves into believing the myth that capitalism grew and prospered out of the Protestant ethic of hard work and sacrifices. Capitalism was built on the exploitation of black slaves and continues to thrive on the exploitation of the poor, both black and white, both here and abroad.”

“Nuevamente nos hemos engañado creyendo el mito de que el capitalismo creció y prosperó gracias a la ética protestante de trabajo duro y sacrificios. El capitalismo se construyó sobre la explotación de los esclavos negros y continúa prosperando sobre la explotación de los pobres, tanto blancos como negros, tanto aquí como en el extranjero”.

@StillIRise1963 Britain only stopped paying the slaver families compensation for quitting slavery in 2015.

Many of the families are still prominent in politics today.

They would undoubtedly do the same again if they could. They try to make the current economy as close to it as possible. Hence homelessness is used to visually scare the working people to comply with worse pay and conditions.

Eg:Our recent prime minister David Cameron's family.

Today they commit huge frauds on the taxpayers.

The U.S. government needs to leave Twitter and state that privately owned social media is unreliable, prone to corruption and full of misinformation. It should open its own instance in the Fediverse and tell citizens they can find reliable information there.

"The U.S. government... should open its own instance in the Fediverse and tell citizens they can find reliable information there."

FWIW @StillIRise1963 many of digital activists, myself included, lobbied for this back in 2008. neither the Obama admin nor Congress wanted to put money into it... and they had control of both the House and Senate.

and here we are.

For about 2 1/2 years now I’ve enjoyed Comcast- free internet, tv, and phone service run as a city utility. It took about 2 years to roll it out once the votes were counted (I forget the margin but it was huge) and now neighboring towns are copying our model. It’s not perfect, but it’s not Comcast either.

This.

We had an aunt pass away not too long ago. God bless her, she married a hard man to be married to who got much softer as he got older. She was the best thing to ever happen to him and damned if he didn't know it.

... and when we were going through her effects after she passed we found the secret ledger. She sewed, and she kept a chunk of the money she made selling baby quilts in a kitty... Just in case. Her husband wasn't mad at all when we found it. His gave a long, quiet smile and said "She was the smartest person I ever knew, and if I'd married me I'd have done that too."

(We don't actually know how many shops she put her work up in for sale, she didn't keep records like that. To this day, he gets checks for $30 here, $50 there from one of her baby quilts selling that was hanging on some cottage's wall in a sleepy resort town for years. She had a reach in this world that is going to echo long after her soul left her body and we miss her dearly.)

@StillIRise1963 My grandmother told me the same when I was in my teens. She called it " " and said it was in case I got mad when I was on a date and needed to pay for a taxi to get home. It's still wise to continue, though, because you never know what's going to happen in life, and you always need a way to escape, if necessary. Or extra money for an unforeseen emergency.

Ladies and gentlemen, it truly pays even today to .

When my sister sold her home, she had her white realtor come to show the appraiser around. She LEFT HER OWN HOME during the process. Right now, my college friend is removing all signs of Blackness from her home before she puts it on the market. All art, photos, statues are being packed. All books are being turned spine in. THIS IS WHAT RACISM DOES.

@StillIRise1963 And unfortunately depending on where you live that only does so much, damn it.

Why is it so difficult for some people to wrap their heads around the idea of systemic racism? How can the fact that houses in Black neighborhoods are consistently undervalued be anything BUT systemic racism?

@StillIRise1963 When we started looking to put our house on the market, I was very clear with the realtor that I knew ALL the data about optimizing offer price. We did an 85% move out before the house hit the market had the house staged and took a trip out of the country for 2 weeks. We only accepted offers while we were out of country. Once we accepted the offer, we made sure to never be visible outside the property.

I'm a 59 year old African American woman. I've desegregated a town, a school system and many other spaces. When I discuss racism in this nation, I'm not going to ameliorate my speech for the comfort of anyone. I don't exist to comfort others about the reality of what I was born into - what we all live in together. If that's a problem for you, I suggest you embark on some self-reflection to determine what your actual role is within this system.

We're also the second post-Civil Rights generation to lose such legal protections.

This constant, slow churn has surely made me seasick. I hate that we can't yet get to tenths and hundreds.

@StillIRise1963 @samir @ricardoharvin My 93-yo mother was once privileged to hear Dr. Martin Luther King, Senior (ie, MLK, Jr’s father) speak. A group of students & faculty at her university invited him, the hall was booked, announcements were printed, everything was on track.

Then, the day before- it seems like it’s always at the last minute- the hall was canceled. It was Oklahoma in the late 1940’s…

@DecaturNature @futurebird @StillIRise1963 What I keep coming back to is that Trump has said multiple times he intends to form a "special task force" to arrest "illegals" without obeying laws like rights to trials/etc. To my mind it is very clear what this really means. I believe he plans to use arbitrarily declaring anyone he wants as "illegal" and just having the special task force arrest and imprison them solely on that basis. Essentially gestapo

I think stuff like this is leading to that
