My favourite is probably Fairytale of New York by the Pogues - but wait... I'm betting you've likely never heard this bluesy jazzy New Orleans crossed with 40s swing version - seriously good.

Did you know that Hitler was inspired by our govts handling of the 'Indian problem'? They built similar crematoriums, mass grave sites & used same brainwashing methods on Indigenous kids here. They also medically experimented on native kids with govt consent but not their parents. Canada needs to do a lot more to rectify injustices - still ongoing.

What y'all favorite album?
I got 2 , songs in the key of life and innervisions _ stevie wonder. My gramps got these on vinyl and played them over and over i remember as a kid. I just starting my vinyl collection and these are the first albums I bought! Classics and both released years before my ass was even born !

@Jaden3 Innervisions is such an incredible album. Too High, Innervisions, Don’t you worry about a thing. Perfection!!

He played all the instruments on that album. King!

@Jaden3 For me, Stevie Wonder has always been about the bass lines. SW himself never had a big an impact on me, but the bass grooves? OH FUCK YEAH, I feel that shit deep in my soul.

I mean, SW is a god, that's without a doubt. He put together some amazing bands and produced music that should love forever.

ArtBear, (edited )

A year ago I started a little personal project to every week share music + a variety of other tracks from all sorts of eras & genres too.

I called it for my own humour & just to sort of see what I was doing.

It's over 500 tracks now. Lots of good music, quite a bit you might not have heard.

I keep a playlist too, which can be found here:

Calling all fans! 📢 (Un)inspired by the non-comprehensiveness of the You Must Hear Before You Die list, we're making a Mastodonian 1001 Albums list! 📝

Tell me THE album(s) you think everyone should hear, any genre/language/year, and I'll add to the list (reply here or DM; let me know if you want the submission to be anonymous). And even if you don't add an album, check out the list - maybe you'll find your next fave. :ablobjam:

Once I've cleared the current backlog, we'll be getting pretty close to 500 albums!!! :amariokartyoshi:

Thanks to all who have already sent in submissions, boosted, liked, and checked out the list! You're all wonderful. :blobaww:

Inspired by @sheepchase doing this, and by @LadyMarth01 posting her album of the day, I'm gonna get in on the fun and do the for August!

Since I'm starting a few days late, I'll catch up, then do one a day.

auzzy,

Day 11: song you never tire of.

"B-1" by Nisennenmondai.

This was introduced to me as the sound of a futuristic car crash, and I've yet to find anything more accurate. I find the droning and peddle effects and beat and momentary crescendos hypnotic in the best way. It really does make me feel like I'm whipping through some futuristic city, surrounded by tall, strange buildings and other unrecognizable vehicles.

They're one of my favorite bands.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-43938vo_9M

auzzy,

Day 25: dead artist

"Waste" by Jóhann Jóhannsson.

I came home after seeing Mandy in theaters so freaking amped. I adore it for oh so many reasons, and the score is no small part. I've listened to it so many times. The heavily clanging metal, big synths, and atmosphere hanging over the whole thing.

I was quite sad to learn we'd hear no more from him: he accidentally OD'd earlier in 2018. But exploring the rest of his work remains a treat.

@jake4480 Hey man, I just got to this today. Traveling. Visiting family. Anyway...

Great write up. I got several new and helpful ideas, and a couple reminders like to update my BC Wishlist items. I use the wishlist as a bookmark.

You and I both prefer physical media to streaming. I don't subscribe to any music streaming services. Only thing I feel like I miss from those is their recommendation algos. I hear good things about it. I guess BC's "you may also like" is pretty similar.

Love that you mentioned band members as a source of referrals to good music. That's always worked for me.

I need to check out Faircamp!

I would also recommend the feature on BC where they send you an email when someone you follow buys new music. I need to expand my use of this feature. It's really helpful.

and our spotify strategy of growing our grassroots success into new markets is working! we will be touring europe for the first time ever later this year — this is a direct result of a very intentional push we've been doing, using targeted facebook and instagram ads to find people who like the music and drive them to spotify. and spotify has noticed too; the new activity has caused their algorithm to playlist us a couple times. LOTS of new ears.

Synth genius Wendy Carlos studied physics & music at Brown & Columbia. She helped develop the 1st Moog synthesizer & her 1968 classical album Switched-On Bach went platinum. She brought & tech together & composed soundtracks for A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Tron & more.

Carlos was assigned male at birth & transitioned to female. Unfortunately, many journalists focus more on her gender than her accomplishments that changed music forever. http://www.wendycarlos.com

ShrikeTron,

@alexanderhay So then why are you telling me to solve that problem by buying a cd player? That's completely useless.

I'm the one that's saying she needs to make better business decisions many posts back.

Who's the most American band?

What does that even mean to you?
:blobcatthink:

Virginicus,

@SrRochardBunson The most American band is…I’ve forgotten their name but that doesn’t matter because there are thousands of them. They play college bars and roadhouses and spend all day driving a 20-year-old van to the next gig. They definitely don’t have a recording contract with a multinational conglomerate. They don’t have any money but it still beats working at a job.

Lightfighter,

@SrRochardBunson Went with "other". Band that comes to mind is, The Dead Milkmen, how can this not be the most American song? 😀 https://youtu.be/1v3CzvQ9e_w
