A question for the Mastodon hive mind. Do you know of any #scifi + #science crossovers #writing about future perspectives? Leaning more, or at least, based more, on the science?
I have an insane idea for a project that could make my worlds* collide... or never happen. Thoughts?
*Harry is my scifi writing (trying) alter ego, by day I'm an actual scientist.
@HarryTuttle Always been interested in finding an SF novel, or could be a collection, that had was situated a few hundred years in the future, but no aliens, no faster that light travel or communications, no immortality or supernatural stuff. Not even any propulsion systems that violate physics. Just a very hard SF driven setting with clever ideas about actual prospective technologies. Then tell a good story using that as a framework.
@mastodonmigration That sounds cool as well. Maybe my next project. Having sasid tha, I'm pretty sure there are plenty of works like that but this morning my mind is blank.
Recent ships of the human space fleet are equipped with #DiffieHellman-Drives (which enable them to exchange their position with other, far away ships without allowing outsiders to intercept) and #FloydSteinberg shields (which diffuses all incoming attacks).
Interstellar navigation was very easy after all ships computers were programmed with the #Bresenham-Algorithm.
All crew members were trained in all details of the #Kernighan-#Ritchie protocol.
The Karatsuba algorithm is the base for the DH drive. Only with it, the numbers needed to form a stable DH field can be multiplied! Every child knows that 🤣
Bound in black goat leather with hand-painted edges,
hand-painted endpages, and a foil design on the cover.
I did a write-up on my blog about my design choices
and techniques for this bind. If you're ineterested head
on over to my website (blackoakbindery.com)!
@TheSpaceshipper I absolutely would. Just never let on that the interior sets for the Millennium Falcon don’t even vaguely fit into its exterior design. #sacrilege
@nyrath@iamgerardthomas There's definitely a really big hump to get over with Blender. Compared to a lot of other design programmes, it seems very unintuitive at first. Once that bridge is crossed though, the basics come pretty fast.
I need some new science fiction to read, who has some suggestions? I don't like military sci-fi. For reference, my favorite series is the Expanse, I also enjoyed Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, I love Robert Charles Wilson's books. I mostly enjoy space operas and unique stories about technology, for example I really liked the recent book Mountain in the Sea about AI and intelligent octopus. Suggestions from the awesome Bookstodon community? @bookstodon#Bookstodon#Scifi#ScienceFiction
@Jennifer@bhalpin@bookstodon seconding the Vorkosigan series. The tone in the books swings a LOT with some very dark stuff in it and then lighthearted comedy but I loved the series. Agree with starting with “The Warriors Apprentice”

Michael Crichton wrote Jurassic Park in Palatino on a Macintosh II using Word for Mac 3.0/4.0. Screenshot is from my Voyager edition ebook that was developed using Hypercard and distributed on a 1.44 floppy disk. Voyager ebooks were mainly marketed to PowerBook users for reading on the go. #itsaunixsystem#iknowthis#vintageapple#scifi#jurassicpark
@csilverman It is beautifully done. If you have an old Mac or Basilisk, I recommend downloading it from one of the Mac software archives and checking it out. Well worth it.
As the first commercial #spacecraft lands on the #moon, for #SciFi readers this all looks rather familiar.... one of the dominant tropes of so much #sciencefiction is the issue of privatised space exploration.... whether its a celebration of #capitalism's move into #space, or more often a critique of what commercial interests bring to space missions.
In any case, looking back in 50 years time, I can see this being seen as an important milestone (for good or worse)
