Lamppost EV chargers are the answer to how you charge your vehicle in cities.

This is possible because when energy intensive street lamps were replaced by LEDs, there’s excess power for charging EVs.

All cities should do this. ⚡️

@davidho Here's an enhancement: setting up bike corrals with ebike charging capabilities by streetlight poles.

In urban environments with multistory apartments, storing a bike above the ground floor is a challenge for many; a 50+ lb/23+ kg ebike even more of a challenge. Curbside storage and charging would enable cycling for many. And the total demand is much less than EV charging...

Electric vehicles are making an increasingly bigger dent in oil use, both globally and in Australia. In 2022, they displaced the use of 1.5m barrels of oil a day. Daily global oil demand is around 97m barrels, so there's a long way to go.

But it is not electric cars doing most of the work. It is e-bikes and mopeds. These devices are ten times as common as electric cars globally (led by widespread adoption in ), and twice as popular as e-cars in Australia. In 2022, electric micromobility devices globally displaced more than four times as much oil as electric cars.

If you've never tried one, consider giving it a go. Most bike shops will give you a free test ride. Personally, getting an has been one of the best decisions I've made in the last few years and has been one important way of maintaining our household record of never having owned a car.

For more than a month, since my cargo Lectric eTrike was delivered, all my visits to the grocery store (5 miles, roundtrip) have been on the trike. It's been fun, and my gas consumption (some trips are still too far, or time is a factor, or I need the pickup to haul something big) has been cut in half. Hope to do this through the winter.

Aventon Abound - first ride

I hemmed and hawed on many models, but as my goal is to replace all trips <5 miles with a bike, I knew I would get more out of investing in one that could haul groceries. It doubles as a way to keep my heavy backpack clean and off my back when riding.

I didn't open her up as I took a main street without a bike lane, but you can see the downhill in the results 😉

Should I record an overview/ride?

PSA for all the owners out there: when we tried to file a claim with our renters insurance for @shotsandcuts Rad Power bike, we were told it didn’t qualify for coverage because it had a throttle and was therefore, a vehicle that needed to be ensured separately.

something we were not told when we bought the policy even though we explicitly inquired about “bikes” and we’re told that yes, they were covered.

so if you have a bike, and you think it’s insured under a renters or home owners policy, maybe check just in case.

If there is a true mobility revolution, it is electric cycling: good for health, good for road safety, good for the environment compared to all alternatives but walking - and with more options for all ages!

How is it possible that Hamilton does not have an e-bike incentive program? It does not surprise from the Province, but in Ontario only Toronto has something in place.

Seen this bike around the village and finally got chance to chat to the owner. The owner was THRILLED I knew it was a pashley mailstar, then went through the Elephant Bike charity scheme and then he had retrofitted a bafang mid drive. #EV #battery repair is dangerous. Here’s why mechanics want to do it anyway.

Fixing car and #ebike batteries saves money and resources — but challenges are holding back the industry.

by Maddie Stone, Dec 08, 2023

"About three times a day, Rich Benoit gets a call to his auto shop, The Electrified Garage, from the owner of an older Tesla Model S whose car battery has begun to fail. The battery, which used to provide several hundred miles of range, might suddenly only last 50 miles on a single charge. These cars are often out of warranty, and the cost of replacing the battery can exceed $15,000.

"For most products, repair is a more affordable option than replacement. And in theory, lots of these Tesla batteries can be fixed, said Benoit, who runs one of the few Tesla-focused independent repair shops in the United States. But due to the time and training involved, the safety considerations, and the complexity of the repair, Benoit said that the bill to fix one car battery at his shop might run upwards of $10,000 — more than most consumers are willing to pay. Instead, he said, many choose to sell or donate their old vehicle for scrap and buy a brand new Tesla.

“'It’s getting to the point where [the car] is almost like a consumable, like a TV,' Benoit said.

"Benoit’s experience heralds a problem that early adopters of EVs, as well as electric micromobility devices like e-bikes and #escooters, are beginning to face: These vehicles contain big, expensive batteries that will inevitably degrade or stop working over time. Repairing these batteries can have sustainability benefits, saving energy and resources that would otherwise be used to manufacture a new one. That’s particularly important for EVs, which contain very large batteries that must be used for years to offset the carbon emissions associated with making them.

But many EV and e-mobility batteries are difficult to repair by design, and some manufacturers actively discourage the practice, citing safety concerns. The small number of independent mechanics who repair EV or e-bike batteries struggle to do so affordably due to design challenges, safety requirements, and a lack of access to spare parts.

“'There are a lot of automakers who do not allow battery repair, even in case of minor damages to the battery case,' a GDV spokesperson told Grist. Automakers sometimes choose to replace the battery if the car was involved in an accident that caused the airbags to activate. Both practices 'will lead to an increase of repair costs,' and ultimately, higher insurance premiums, the spokesperson said.

"New rules around EV battery repairability would come at a critical time. Helps, of Cox Automotive, said that two trends in EV battery design are occurring in parallel: 'Batteries are either becoming very serviceable, or not serviceable at all.'

"Some, like the batteries inside Volkswagon’s ID.4, feature LEGO-like modules that are easy to remove and replace. Others, like Tesla’s new 4680 structural battery pack, don’t include modules at all. Instead, all of the cells are bonded together and bonded to the pack itself, a design Helps described as 'impossible to service.' If a bad cell group is found, the entire battery must be replaced.

“'It’s still a fully #recyclable battery,' Helps said. 'You’re just not able to repair it.'

"#Tesla didn’t respond to Grist’s request for comment."

Anyone have one? Or know of other options I should consider?

Whenever you can, ride your bike instead of driving.
If it's hard, get an .
If it's raining, get some fenders, a hat, maybe a poncho.
If you don't have space, or need to bus, get a folding bike.
If it's scary, be brave, but stay safe.
Don't make excuses, change takes effort. Ask for help.
Vote, based on this experience.

If you can't, then don't. But there are trikes, adaptive bikes, and technology that can help if you want that.
