Since I've seen a lot of chatter about people switching to #Firefox as Google ramps up the enshitification of #Chrome, let me tell you about a killer feature for people who (a) need multiple accounts on the same websites (eg. devs) or specifically (b) have to use multiple Google accounts.
Firefox has an official addon called Multi Account Containers that lets you trivially set up color coded tabs that have separate sets of cookies. Log into your dev account in one, and your test account in another. Log into your personal #gmail in one and have another tab next to it with your work Gmail. I'm actually not signed in to any Google accounts in most my tabs, I just have containers for the specific tasks I do on Google products.
The "New Outlook" demands that when adding your #Gmail account, you also give Microsoft a copy of all your Gmail email, contacts, and calendar data.
The "Learn More" link confirms:
"Syncing your account to the Microsoft Cloud means that a copy of your email, calendar, and contacts will be synchronized between your email provider and Microsoft data centers."
Is your primary e-mail account #gmail? As in the e-mail account we would use to communicate, so not necessarily your job related e-mail. Feel free to share widely.
Thanks to your initial feedback, these include improvements like:
🗓️ Easier access to Proton Calendar
⏩ Easy migration from #Gmail
🚨 Notification badges
🔠 Improved accessibility and font support
Unless my ISP somehow authorizes email to be sent from my IP, Gmail will now bounce it.
Unless I am hooked up with an email service that somehow has clout with Google, Gmail will bounce it.
Since the "ISP" through whom I am attempting to send mail is #DigitalOcean, I find item #1 to be dubious. They are not blocking my outgoing mail port, and I have no problems sending to most recipients (Google and Microsoft being the only exceptions I'm aware of).
DigitalOcean seems to encouraging its users to use a 3rd-party service -- but I'm already paying them for hosting, and managing my own email service; I don't want to pay yet another service just for the privilege of being allowed to send messages to Gmail's increasingly walled garden.
I remember the days when people were furious Google was scanning their emails to serve ads. Now we’ve reached the point that everything you send and receive is being filtered through its AI model and you’re expected to love it.
It was always my dream to be quoted in The Register.
The decision has been criticized by Pratik Patel, who describes himself on #Mastodon as "a blind technologist … who finds himself championing #accessibility for fun and necessity."
"I know many #blind people who use #GMail's HTML view. Not only will they be confused but will be unhappy," he wrote.

The #DigitalMarketsAct mandates Meta to "enable end users to freely choose to opt-in to [combining or cross-using personal data] by offering a less personalised but equivalent alternative".
When I pointed out to Meta that by offering users to either #consent to #SurveillanceAds or pay € 275 per year for #Instagram & #Facebook isn't "equivalent alternative" they said, Meta has to do that because of #GDPR 😤 Really??
While Alphabet seems to be better in terms of the new #browser & #search choice screens, they have a strange view regarding their new obligation to allow un-installing pre-installed apps like #PlayStore or #Gmail:
Alphabet's lobbyists argue un-install and remove are two different things and as the #DigitalMarketsAct's Art 6(3) only mandates un-install but not removal, the current "deactivation" feature in Android would be enough. 🤔
I've been using Fastmail on my own domain for years, and my time has been phenomenal from the initial migration to right now. Virtually unlimited email aliases, iOS push support with Mail.app (not very common these days), Bitwarden integration, macOS and iOS profiles to quickly set things up and a bunch more. Not an ad. Should your account be lost, you'll lose access to everything. That means your #Gmail, #GDrive contents, #YouTube and workspace apps. Any valuable cloud stored content will be gone forever. The loss of a Gmail account could have follow-on effects such as the loss of other accounts that use Gmail as a login.
To get a logo and blue checkmark as a verified BIMI sender in #Gmail, organizations have to shell out $1,500/year to buy a digital certificate proving ownership of a trademarked brand. Seriously? Talk about gatekeeping and commercializing what should be free and easily accessible #security features. #WTF
"…when one single node is much, much bigger than all the others, it gets disproportionate power to change things and enforce its own whims.
An example of that is email with #Gmail. They have very good spam filters, but sometimes catch people who try to self-host email. It creates a situation where it’s so difficult to self-host email and you’re forced to just go use Gmail or one other large provider instead."
Fun and games with email today… Yahoo and Google have stepped up their filtering game, requiring stricter DKIM/DMARC.
That broke my workplace email addresses.
Consequently, I wound up reviving my old yahoo.com.au email address… fun and games remembering the password to an account I haven't used regularly in the better part of 25 years.
Thankfully, I must've logged in more recently, and changed the password… and crucially, stored it in the password manager. So it's working again.
My home mail server: delivers to the old Yahoo account, no problems at all.
SPFv1 for both work's domains are correct, how the hell does a hobby server admin like me get something right that professionals like Microsoft get wrong?
I remember signing up for #Gmail all those years ago with glee. Back then, #Microsoft email via #hotmail was a hot mess, while #Yahoo email was slightly better—but only in the sense that 💩 is better than 💩 🔛 🔥!!
I am grateful that #Google launched Gmail as it did radically change my life for the better (privacy issues aside).
