I've decided to ACTIVELY decouple from Twitter: Every day, I go back and DM at least 10 of my followers, telling them I've moved here and to follow me here instead (I remove them as followers after that DM). A number of them have set up accounts as a result.
Please do the same if you're more active here than on #Twitter That's how you can help the #twittermigration
Feedback is extremely welcome. This is a loving document, it can only be honed and get better with loving input from other users. What are your best tips for #creators?
"#Mastodon is failing" so hard that #Fediverse just crossed 4mln monthly active accounts (based on the-federation.info). :blobcatgiggle:
This is already slightly more than Nov and Dec #TwitterMigration waves' peaks. And it is still going up.
What I find particularly important is that it seems like a lot of this is not new accounts, but people returning to accounts created before and then left unused.
I expect this to be a more resilient kind of growth. Less of a drop after it peaks.
So, it is possible for a group to make the collective decision to leave Twitter. Scientists "suffering insults and mass-spam are abandoning Twitter," and setting up shop on Mastodon.
"Glaciologist @Ruth_Mottram had more than 10,000 followers on Twitter but left in February and joined an alternative scientists' forum powered by Mastodon."
So apparently, after being here since November, I crossed 4K followers sometime recently, which is kind of astounding to me since I only made it to roughly three k in the algorithm-stanched mire of twitter after being active on it for SEVEN effing years, and it's never really been a NUMBERS thing for me - cuz if it were I would probably type fewer f- and c- and t-words and do fewer extended drunkrants - but more about "I think these words put together this way are funny and let's see if my online friends think so" or sometimes "here is a song I wrote somewhat relevant my current RAGETOPIC" or "I wonder how long can I make this fucking sentence whilst still doing proper grammar shit AND still having people read it," but, that said...
Big thanks to you kids who decided all that^ rubbish was worth following and for helping all of us carve a fun new space here, and since we've got a new wave of #twittermigration from birdland like it is 1933 Germany - seeing as it kind of fucking is - here are some must-follow accounts that are alternately funny, menschy, delightful or, on occasion, funmenschlightful, and you should follow them if you enjoy good things versus bad.
Starting with the intrepid and abstractly hilarious brainiac who made our beachhead instance [beige.party] the BEST one and a warm port for immigrants: @theropologist
This list is in no way complete and in five minutes I'll probably think of others and feel like an asshole - which I AM - and then fifteen minutes later again and probably add to it, but - BUT - you can't go wrong following these good word-sharing people. SO GO HOG WILD, is my advice.
Beige bless and never forget to smash fascism, mis compañeros.
When you post on Twitter(1) or Bluesky(2) you grant them a broad perpetual license to use, modify, and sublicense your content. You effectively make them co-owners of your content. They can mine it and monetize it. They can even sell it. When you post on Mastodon(3) most instances take no license at all. That's right, they tell you what they are doing with your content—storing posts and delivering them—but no license.
THREAD: I made a series of images for an Instagram post I made about migrating to the fediverse. I figured I'd share with anyone else who wants to use, so I included some blank template versions too. DM if you'd like the Adobe Illustrator file so you can make your own edits. And please, comment if I got anything wrong so I can correct it.
This is our 3rd quarterly update on which platforms are growing, new entries such as #BlueSky, #Substack Notes, #Nostr & all public data on Meta's #project92
Includes latest on the #RedditMigration,
New polling, new posting data & more.
For those new here from #twitter to #mastodon may I suggest @FediFollows as well as @feditips. If you’re interested in running your own server I personally use @mastohost for managing my service, simple to setup and pay them, been using them for months and it’s cheaper than Twitter blue for many individuals, but inexpensively can scale if you become more popular as I have been. Enjoy your time tooting posts away #twittermigration#welcome
How did you all pick your #Mastodon instance? Was there any particular reasoning behind it?
For me I was looking for two things.
A regional instance in hopes that I could find more local connections and maybe help shape the community if I felt like being more involved.
I'm not here because I think Mastodon is better than other options. I don't think it is (yet). I like its potential so my decision to make this my main social media home is about tomorrow, not today.
I wanted an instance whose first letters could be typed with my left hand only.
I do most of my social media when I'm waiting for something I'm working on to load and if I'm able to swap between tasks using just my left hand, I can peek and get back to work quickly.
Been making fun today of the $8 blue check shenanigans, but the serious side is becoming very clear. For show business, sports and media celebrities, journalists, writers, artists, politicians and influencers, social media is instrumental to making their living. And like it or not, Twitter right now is the only game in town. By threatening their livelihoods Elon is extorting these people, and he will be successful unless and until a viable social media alternative exists.
If there was one piece of advice I could give to new Mastodon users who are finding their feeds quiet or boring, it is to follow as many people and hashtags as you can. This is not Twitter; there is no algorithm, it is not going to fill your feed with stuff it thinks you like. You have to curate it yourself. Once you do, though, it's so much more vibrant and rewarding than Twitter has been for a year. #TwitterMigration#Twitter
Update #3: And it broke again 🧐 I have another idea and meanwhile a static copy. No more updates for this post 😉
Hey #Mastodon & #Fediverse, look what I build: It's an updated table of @tchambers list of journalists in here, that stays up-to-date with data on #Followers and when they were last active:
