BREAKING: Starbucks to shut down all Ithaca locations as a part of its union busting efforts.

This means that over 30 people will lose their jobs, as a result of Starbucks' illegal anti-union efforts.
Ithaca was the first city that had 100% of its Starbucks stores unionized & now it will the first city to have all of its Starbucks stores shuttered.

The story hasn't broken locally yet (SB did a news dump last night); message me if you want to cover this

The fallout is growing from Tesla’s continued refusal to sign a collective agreement with its Swedish mechanics.

On top of the solidarity strikes, one of Denmark’s largest pension funds is selling its $58 million stake in Tesla for refusing to respect the Nordic labor model.

New campaign finance reports reveal paid $20k to stage a rally of fake striking auto workers last September, with non-union people holding up ‘Union Members for Trump’ signs. Right now they are "asking folks to support Trader Joe’s United by signing on in solidarity and letting us know you’ll stand with us if we call for a customer strike!"

"UPS announced this week that they will be laying off 12,000 people, approximately 2.4 percent of their global workforce...

As you may recall, UPS drivers won a hard fought battle earlier this year for higher wages and less batshit working conditions so they don’t die of heat stroke.

Is the company truly suffering? Well, no. It still had an adjusted operating profit of $9.9 billion... they “returned $7.6 billion of cash to shareowners through dividends and share buybacks".

At the same time the company is laying off workers, the board of directors approved — for the 15th year in a row — an increase to the company’s quarterly dividend. This means that people are getting laid off, but shareholders are getting a raise."

Hey friends, @beep's exceptionally good, concise primer on unionizing your tech workplace, You Deserve a Tech Union, is ALMOST HERE.

(I've read it and it's excellent and of course Ethan's the best.)

You can pre-order it here, and there's even a link to email the publisher if you need a pricing accommodation. https://abookapart.com/products/you-deserve-a-tech-union

Let's all support the REI union, which is suing the "coop" owners for violations of labor law.

The union wants publicity about this for now.

I sat off-screen and listened to a peer's at a major company last week. I didn't even work there, and even with that distance, I am astounded and disgusted at the state of this industry, and the spinelessness of the proceedings.

If you haven't experienced one yet, let me tell you the playbook.

This is the...fourth one I've witnessed personally, now? I was laid off with even less grace than this over a year ago. I can call it out because I've got no skin in the game anymore. I'm not getting rehired; I don't need to cultivate a professional image on the net anymore, so I'll tell y'all what you need to hear:

Unionize.

If your work doesn't have a . Make one. Start right now.

Collective action is the only thing that will protect you from your boss's greed and incompetence.

Megacorp execs were interviewed about the strike & were quoted saying their goal was to "break the WGA," and to drag things out "until members start losing their apartments and homes"

After corporate counsel reminded the execs of labor laws, an update was released saying that actually the execs did not want to make workers homeless in retaliation for exercising labor rights because that would violate laws so its all a big misunderstanding

My union, SAG-AFTRA, is striking in Hollywood. It represents 160K movie and TV actors, as well as about 500 staffers at NPR. We journalists are not part of this strike but we support our fellow union workers!!!! ❤️ ❤️
I was never part of a union before coming to NPR but quickly learned the power of colleagues helping each other to be treated fairly at work!!!

Here Justine Bateman’s thread lays out a case for why AI in entertainment must be addressed now, protections created or writers, actors and directors may not have a profession or career at all very soon. Writers Guild (WGA), SAG-AFTRA and the Directors Guild of America (DGA) are fighting for our professions to exist at all.

Screenshot of tweets by @JustineBateman • 2h Your digital image can be triple and quadruple booked, so that bodes well for a 10 percenter. 4/ 2. Films customized for a viewer, based on their viewing history, which has been collected for many years. Actors will have the option to have their image "bought out" to be used in anything at all. 5/ 3. Films "ordered up" by the viewer. For example, " want a film about a panda and a unicorn who save the world in a rocket ship. And put Bill Murray in it." 6/ 4. Viewers getting digitally scanned themselves, and paying extra to have themselves inserted in these custom films. 7/
Screenshot of tweets by @JustineBateman 5. Licensing deals made with studios so that viewers can order up older films like STAR WARS and put their face on Luke Skywalker's body and their ex-wife's face on Darth Vader's body, etc. 8/ 6. Training an Al program on an older hits TV series, and creating an additional season. FAMILY TIES, for example, has 167 episodes. An Al program could easily be trained on this, and create an eighth season. We only shot seven. 9/ Al has to be addressed now or never. I believe this is the last time any labor action will be effective in our business. If we don't make strong rules now, they simply won't notice if we strike in three years, because at that point they won't need us. 10/end Addendum: Actors, you must have iron-clad protection against the Al use of your image and voice in the SAG MBA or your profession is finished. Demand it from @sagaftra and do not accept any AMPTP proposal that does not have it.

Elon Musk has long opposed unions, but now he’s taking his war on workers to an entirely new level.

In Sweden, Tesla wants to blow up the Nordic labor model, while SpaceX is echoing the Federalist Society by trying to destroy the NLRB in the United States. He must be stopped.

I spent over a decade working as a makeup assistant. My spouse, a musician. Both of us were in strong unions. We are lucky that we still enjoy those benefits after many years in the business. I am very thankful for the union support we receive.

Why do I bring this up?

Folks, (especially you younger folk) unions are so very important. I can’t stress this enough. Get in one, and make it stronger. Now is that time.
