Since people are talking about Kent State, Ohio, 1970, it's a good time to talk about Jackson State, Mississippi, 1970.

Similar situation, except there was no active protest, just a bunch of students hanging out. The mayor of Jackson declared a riot and called in the pigs. Someone threw a glass bottle, not at the pigs, but they still opened fire. Phillip Gibbs, a student at Jackson State, and James Green, a high school student who was walking home from his job, were murdered by cops. Many others were wounded.

Sepia-toned photo of a couple in a casual seated pose, looking towards the camera. She is on the left, nearly sitting on his lap, smiling, wearing a dark knee-length dress with buttons up the front and a wide collar, holding a white purse. Her hair is straight, shoulder-length, curled at the end, with bangs. He is wearing light-colored slacks and a boldly patterned shirt, like a Hawaiian short, and has his arm around his wife. His hair is short and his expression is more curious than friendly.

Finally, the moment you've been waiting for: Sally's Guide to Getting And Keeping a Job in Construction! Focused on USA rules/regulations/culture and aimed particularly at people seen as female or feminine, especially queer kids. Construction was a lifeline for me during a dark time and it could be for you. If you're desperately trying to get out of your parents' house, but don't want to get into college, this could be helpful! Could be in 4 or 5 parts, sincere there is plenty to cover.

ADVANCE PREPARATION:

  1. Figuring out if it’s really for you. OK, one big skill you should have is an awareness of 3D space, but how can you know if you have that? Well, did you like playing with legos? Are you into fiber arts such as knitting, crochet, or sewing? Those give you some good skills to build on, e.g.: counting to 10, measuring, cutting, comparing sizes, etc. Are you good at stacking dishes? Good at packing a suitcase? Into Tetris? These are all good signs. Also, cleaning is huge on a construction site. The ability to quickly survey a space and prioritize tasks for getting or keeping it organized is super helpful.

On the people skills side: just have good communication and the ability to ask clarifying questions. Working in a male-dominated field can be frustrating because they downplay the value of communication skills, then spend so much time arguing about pointless shit. Cultivate patience and a sense of humor for this.

Another helpful communication tip: learn conversational Spanish. Doesn’t matter where you are, you’re bound to have some coworkers whose first language is Spanish.

Another SUPER helpful thing to learn is the technical lingo! Just being able to identify a lintel or tell the difference between a rafter and a joist, for example, will give you far more credibility than such trivia really deserves. Watching youtube videos of people doing the type of work you're interested in is a good idea, especially if the videos are made somewhat locally to you.

"OMG Trump called his domestic enemies vermin! This is a lot like Hitler, who called his domestic enemies rats!"

Listen, you're not wrong. But let's not forget how USA propaganda called Japanese-Americans "vermin," yes, in that exact wording, and compared them to insects as well as rodents, to justify the Japanese internment camps. How USA propaganda called Italian immigrants rats (anarchist rats at that!) to justify cutting off immigration from there.

Yes, you should be alarmed. I'm not saying don't be alarmed. I'm saying you're not alarmed enough.

It's , and in 2024 I'm reflecting on the fact that although I've known about Walter Rodney and his seminal work "How Europe Underdeveloped Africa" for years, it wasn't until I started reading it last year that I found out that Rodney was assassinated by his own Guyanese government in a car bombing. He was 38.

I'm obligated to point out to fellow white people, in case you missed it, the trend of white people lionizing a heroic Black person in a show of solidarity while studiously ignoring the vicious violence enacted against that person by the powers that be.

Also, Rodney was banned from Jamaica and from his teaching position at the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica. This caused protests that escalated to riots in Kingston in 1968. Part of the wave of protests that swept the world from that year to the next.

Anyway, please read Rodney.
And/or about Rodney. https://web.archive.org/web/20041105060409/http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/%7Emarto/pbs/roberts.htm

Economists when talking to CEOs and presidents: Yes we need endless growth. Make more stuff, forever

Economists when talking to environmentalists: Of course we don't mean for everyone to make more stuff forever, you idiot. You fucking moron. "Growth" just means "increasing the goodness" so if you're opposed to growth then you're opposed to goodness.

You already know that plastics aren't being recycled, not to any significant extent. But there are some good details in this MIT article. It talks about some promising options for increasing reuse and recycling, talks about bioplastics, and notes the emergence of a company called "Perpetual" that's trying to stand up whole new circular systems for food packaging in 3 (soon to be 4) USA cities. Ultimately though, the tide of plastics can't be stemmed until polymer manufacturers, most of which are also oil extractors like Exxon, are forced to pay for the costs of pollution.

Note for the liberals playing on here as you continuously block people to your left:

"Trolling" is not when someone disagrees with you politically. The elements of trolling are threefold:

  1. Inflammatory
  2. Dishonesty
  3. For shits and giggles

Just because your ass is inflamed doesn't mean you got trolled.

How massive were last summer's Canadian wildfires?

So massive that the area of forest destroyed--18.5 million hectares--is triple the previous record.

So massive that the carbon emissions from the destroyed tree bodies dwarfed Canada's annual GHG emissions from all other sources.

In fact, the emissions from Canadian wildfires in 2023 were roughly equivalent to 6% of global emissions for 2021.

In normal conditions, the lost carbon from wildfires is recuperated by forest regrowth within a few years. But with temperatures continuing to increase, there's less time between fires for such regrowth to occur. So, we're balanced on the edge of a major tipping point, where wildfires in Canada, Siberia, and Australia could turn forests from net carbon sinks into net carbon sources.

This article does a pretty good job discussing how scientists are integrating wildfire emissions into global carbon budget thinking, and carbon budgets generally.

This popped up in my email today (courtesy of the Public Books newsletter) and it got me thinking. For those of you who are admins, have you given any thought to what to do when one of your instance members passes away? Corporate social has zero interest in preserving history for your family and friends. I feel like this space has more conceptual room for things like memorials. But, is anyone talking about it? Thoughts and input welcome.

It's been 10 years since Flint's water crisis started--all because some white supremacist GOP politicians wanted to (or claimed to want to, given the predictable outcome, it's a safer bet that the damage to the Black community was their real goal) save money on water infrastructure. Legal victories have been won and money set aside for compensation to those injured, but Flint's Black residents mostly haven't seen a dime. And they still pay more for their water than most other city residents in the USA, still suffer health impacts from lead poisoning, and are still witnessing the economic hollowing out of their community. Excellent article:

I've been thinking about doing a little explainer/how-to for youngsters especially, on how to get into the construction business, and how to protect your health while you're in it. (Because those fuckers will ruin your body for $15/hour if you let them.)

There's a few things to discuss, and this is just me brainstorming.

This could be a game-changer for a queer kid in a conservative family who doesn't want to go to college.

Construction workers are DESPERATE for new workers. Some of them are even raising wages (others are hiring cut-rate subcontractors, but that's another story). It's one of the few areas where automation can't take your job for quite a while and you don't need a degree.

The trick is getting in the door and making them think you're going to fit into the culture there. The main thing for getting in the door is showing up and having some tools. Which tools, and how to get them, and how to use them--that's a big topic of conversation.

Not gonna lie: as a woman, I know I lost out on roughly 50% of opportunities compared to a similarly situated man. But it still saved my life when I was in a really dark place.

So yeah, stay tuned for that.

This conversation happens at least once per day on here.

Lefty: Voting is not enough. We must be prepared to do more than vote, because the Democratic Party are not interested in saving anyone from fascism.

Liberal: But you must vote! Trump and Biden are not the same!

Lefty: Ya, I said voting is not ENOUGH, not that I'm against it, although--

Liberal: This is Russian propaganda. Stop doing voter suppression, you fascist! I bet you're soooo privileged!

If you're a liberal who doesn't harangue leftists this way, congrats. Go tell your pals to stop shooting the messenger, please.

SallyStrange,
@SallyStrange@eldritch.cafe avatar

My fellow Americans:

If you're genuinely interested in increasing voter turnout, there are a few things you can do:

-volunteer to register new voters
-volunteer with a local candidate you like to do phone banking, or door knocking, or signature gathering
-pressure your Democratic representatives to adopt policies that will actually attract the interest of the 1/3 of eligible voters who never vote (there's a long list of policies supported by at least 60% of Americans but which have been disdained by both parties for decades. Marijuana legalization is just one example)
-vote in Democratic primaries for candidates who support such policies

That's pretty much it. Yelling at politically astute leftists that their correct assessment of the extremely bleak situation is going to have either zero effect or negative effect.
