Poll: Have you ever run the command "rm -rf /" as a root user on your #Linux, #FreeBSD (or *BSD), #macOS, or #Unix system? Please share if you have and how it happened. Let's be honest. Please boost for reach. TIA.
Thanks to your initial feedback, these include improvements like:
🗓️ Easier access to Proton Calendar
⏩ Easy migration from #Gmail
🚨 Notification badges
🔠 Improved accessibility and font support
Today, we're launching the Proton Drive #Windows app for everyone. Automatically backup and sync your files and more. Get it here: https://proton.me/drive/download.
A lot of people often refer to #Linux based operating systems as a #Windows or a #macOS alternative, but Linux can also do a lot of things that its competitors simply can’t.
So let’s look at the things only Linux can do, and that Windows and macOS wished they could:
Tomorrow, Apple will shut down My Photo Stream, after 12 years of service.
I wrote the code that ran the service on iOS devices back in 2010, and it has been faithfully syncing hundreds of millions of photos between iPhones and iPads and their respective macOS Photo libraries for more than a decade. It survived the introduction to iCloud’s Shared Photo Streams (I also wrote its client software), the shutdown of Aperture, and the introduction of iCloud Photo Library. And today, we finally bid it goodbye.
It’s been a good 12 years. 1000 photos, hosted for 30 days, for free, so you can save them on your Mac—those were the days, eh?
I've used #MacOS for my day-to-day work for a good 35yrs. I've had a couple of brief clusters of years where I had to use a Windows at work (but still had MacOS at home).
I've installed #Linux on many old machines to extend their lives a bit, sorting through distros, finding one that would work on limited resources with good results. Fun stuff.
But I'm curious to ask a QUESTION about new computer purchases…
For those of you with a #Mac#Laptop, do you ever turn yours off, or do you leave it plugged in and running over night? Why?
Do you find that leaving it on and plugged in causes any deterioration with the battery? #MacOS#Computer#Computing#Tech
So, Mac users. What apps for Mac keep you on Mac, or make you miss it when you're on other platforms? Can be accessibility-related or not. And they should work on Intel Macs too. I know, but I've seen like one or two that only work on M-series Macs.
25 years ago today, Google was founded.
On the same day, I wiped Windows 98 off my computer, believing that Debian Linux (which I had been using for a while but still kept Windows on another partition) could do everything I had been doing with Windows until then.
Since that day, many installations of Linux, *BSD, MacOS have graced my computers, but Windows has remained, on a few occasions, only an occasional (unwelcome) guest.
In the spirit of a typical support group phrase, I can joyfully say:
'Hello, I'm Stefano, and I haven't been using Windows as my primary operating system for 25 years.'
Ever since installing Jamf on my MacBook Pro, I’ve been having a bunch of weird issues with random freezes and network connectivity issues and programs taking too long to load. This weekend, I’ve had Finder crash several times, and it wouldn’t restart. The system error reporting dialog mentions “watchdogd kernel panic.”
Hello everyone, so at my new job I'll get a MacBook snd until #AsahiLinux supports the security processor I will be a good girl and use #macOS. For someone coming from a setup mixing #ArchLinux, #Fedora#Silverblue / #CoreOS, even some #NixOS and does weird stuff with #podman sometimes: Are there some general recommendations from other #Linux exiles (I use vanilla #GNOME nowadays mostly, so maybe not too much lol?)
I currently plan to use the mac as mostly a shiny looking physical terminal + some vscode/vi, that should be mostly trivial. As such I'm mostly worried about things like a proper keyboard layout (I use us altgr-intl, caps mapped to ctrl, tab to esc).
Otherwise I'm thinking of grabbing #Firefox and activating Lockdown Mode. I've seen nix-home and will try setting that up for day-to-day tasks/tools.
Coming from Evolution, is Apple Mail decent? Any other "classic" GNOME tool I'd miss? Currently looking for trustworthy replacements for Nick's YT downloader, Warp (Wormhole GUI), Frog (OCR tool), Obfuscate (picture obfuscator/censoring tool), Characters (searching through Unicode symbols/emoji). Anything else I may take for granted but is different? ¹
¹ I already know the cli differences w.r.t. bsd based tools, but my personal scripts are mostly posix/ksh8x compliant anyway :D
If you are an #Apple enthusiast and are a #Reddit refuge trying out #Lemmy or #Kbin, I moderate quite a few Apple communities over on #LemmyWorld. Come join in on the convos!

So, my 2013 iMac crashed again. It froze while the screensaver was on. See attached screenshot of the crash report... Any idea what this means? Is it the graphics driver? The GPU on the CPU? Power supply issues? #macos#troubleshooting
