Know any really talented full stack software engineers? Have them apply to the Center for Open Science! One of the best perks of the job will be the ability to see all the stupid jokes I make in our Slack. (But seriously, if anyone wants an honest look at what it's like to work here, feel free to reach out!)
We had a question from someone asking, what Mastodon client for Windows do people use which is accessible with NVDA. I thought here might be the perfect place to post that question? What do YOU use, or how do you access Mastodon on PC? Please let us know!
I wanna do an ActivityPub API that's really just that... a robust, general purpose backend capable of serving a variety of client apps.
Maybe v2 would have customizable API for compatibility with existing clients.
First things first though... I checked with Awesome ActivityPub to see if there were any active projects already doing something like this that I could just jump in on.

2023 in #software was a year defined by anxiety - seeing our employers copy one another's "strategies" of #layoffs and forced #RTO without a clear logic or goal in sight beyond hope that it would make the numbers go up and to the right.
Meanwhile, we also saw our favorite tools and apps take off the "user centered" mask to launch headfirst into squeezing more money out of the user base, and jamming in ill-defined #AI features driven by investor expectations rather than real use cases.
Here's a random question. Anyone know a good tool for building a #timeline?
I am trying to sort out and identify missing records for a 20+ year military career. As you may imagine, there are a LOT of records, but it would be nice if I could plot things on a timeline and more quickly identify where the gaps are.

IEEE Spectrum opinion: Why Bloat Is Still Software’s Biggest Vulnerability A 2024 plea for lean software
"The world ships too much code, most of it by third parties, sometimes unintended, most of it uninspected. Because of this, there is a huge attack surface full of mediocre code."
Let's see if I can perhaps publish a first version of my software for http://watch.metalhead.club today. I still need to tidy up the code a bit and document it properly so that it can be useful for others.
What do you say to whitespace-sensitive/oriented programming languages, assuming your IDE supports the whitespace-behaviour really well, and all the tooling around it is generally good?
So. I have a funny anecdote relating to #virtual#machines and #FreeBSD for you today. I'm doing nothing serious with FreeBSD, just playing in a virtual machine, and having fun with the OS. I just happen to check the FreeBSD site, and noted that release builds for 14.0 had begun on the 10th of November, and the release announcement was to go out on the 14th (yesterday for me in Western Australia). On a whim, I decided to try `sudo freebsd-update -r 14.0-RELEASE upgrade'... and it worked! Ooops, I may have just jumped the gun a little, but everything upgraded without issue. I just find this rather amusing that you can update before the release announcement. #OpenSource#Free#software
Any kbin mobile apps available?
I know Artemis is out there and it looks cool, but it is only for kbin.camp. Is there anything that supports kbin.social?
