I missed this last month: France has launched an initiative to reduce textile waste by paying people to repair their clothes instead of throwing them out.
Starting October, people will be able to claim between €6 and €25 of the cost of mending clothes and shoes. The money will come from a €154 million fund and is meant to support businesses in offering more apparel repair services.
Folk might be interested to know that across the month of May, Sustainable Fashion Week’s #MendItMay campaign invites people to mend one piece of clothing, celebrating repair as an act of empowerment.
I think I'll have a go at my #mending pile. If anyone wants to share mending projects or #craft pics, that'd be lovely.
The stats for why #repair is great are pretty compelling:
Do you have a jacket you used to really love but over the years you've stopped wearing and it's lonely in the back of your closet? I want to renew it for you! Looking for custom designs to make with patches and pins (will source them for you) and keep it climate friendly by recycling your clothes and sending them back to you renewed and stunning or using other existing vintage jackets. It will be filled with personalised pins and patches of your favourite things. Reach out / reblog? ☺️ #fashion
I'm Kahlil, but you may call me Lunæros! I'm extremely new here, just making my way downtown, migrating from the abdominal X app for a plethora of reasons.
Hey friends, does anyone know what either of these objects are?
(They were found in a deceased relative's jewelry box.)
Please boost for added eyes, thanks! 😊
The lettering on the object on the left says:
Hadley Made in USA
Both ends open up to 90⁰ and the main body expands and contracts about a centimetre.
A clever person has said that the object in the right is a Writescope telescoping mechanical pencil. Thanks!
Appeal: does anyone have any juicy photos of museum/collection textiles that I may use in a training session? (With credit, obviously.)
I'm after:
👔 packed/stored textiles (stored well or poorly, your choice!)
👚 examples of different types of historic and modern textiles
👗 examples of damage to textiles (stains, tears, pest nibbles, anything!)
🧶 identified fibres under a microscope
I started this Mastodon instance as an alternative to Twitter because I was tired of the noise and ads.
With this space, I’ve experienced the ups and downs of micro community engagement. It’s by no means a straightforward solution but remains an interesting alternative for those with an interest in fashion and style.
I know some find the UX off putting but I think this is such a valuable community!
A small town in Chile witnesses the growth of discarded clothing appear in the desert nearby. Fast fashion is a horrible drain to the world's ecosystem. In time the mound of mostly man made fibers caught fire. An interesting story can be found here: https://grist.org/international/burn-after-wearing-fashion-waste-chile/
in spite of #Brexit, UK is still a European country that holds on dearly to their #DIY#fashion as a cultural expression.
in USA, fashion became the anchor of consumerist capitalism. there are no sewists, only fashion designers. clothes are for capitalist profit, not for personal expression.
to kill consumerism we need a DIY revival that values personal craft over capitalist profit.
Ok starting a new art thread for 2023! Here's the deal: a mostly daily thread with a different artist every day (sometimes I repeat from previous years if I feel like featuring other work/projects), primarily modern and contemporary since that's my thing. I'm even making a hashtag for it in case that makes it easier for folks to follow. Enjoy! #art#BigArtThread
Dresses by pioneering Black fashion designer Ann Lowe, 1950s-60s, who often went uncredited for her work but today is remembered for designing Jackie Kennedy's wedding dress along with numerous highly detailed couture gowns for high society women and debutantes.
