It’s ’s 20th Birthday.

I’m struggling for energy today, so I’m not sure what to say. But this software has been such a huge part of my life, and I’m SO grateful for it.

From switching my blog to it in December 2008 (v2.7) to trying to get it used at work in the years after that, to freelancing as a WordPress developer and then building products with it.

I’m not a fanboi, but I can’t deny it’s utility and impact.

Thank you, WordPress and all who make it!

The work on my WordPress plugin for embedding fediverse* posts is coming along nicely.

I think next week I'll start reaching out to folks interested in helping me test it.

A few days ago I praised #MattMullenweig from #Automattic #WordPress & #Tumblr as someone trying to be a good contributor to web culture.

He is currently doing a live stream for Tumblr users, and in response to an epileptic user asking if there could be a standard to prevent vibrant, strobing ads as they’re a seizure risk, he made some vague noises like “yeah I guess” then instantly uggested that the user buy the no-ad upgrade.

Paywalled accessibility? Like hell.

I rescind my praise.

shellsharks, to blogging

Hello helpful friends of the Fediverse! I am considering a major rearchitecture of my site, https://shellsharks.com (and adjacent properties) and wanted to get some advice/tips from the wider , , , , communities out here. (Sorry for the long read!)

Currently, my site is hosted on Github Pages which uses for static site generation. I've been using this for nearly 5 years and for the most part have no complaints. The service has decent uptime, is pretty customizable (custom CSS, JS, etc...) and after all this time I am pretty comfortable using it. Some things I am interested in though in terms of re-architecting...

  • Fediverse / ActivityPub compatibility - has gone live with their AP plugin and sites like micro.blog (I think) have some direct AP functionality. I'm interested in exploring this but it's not necessarily a must-have. More on Fediverse point of presence later...

  • IndieWeb functionality - I've baked in as much IndieWeb stuff as I can reasonably do with Jekyll hosted on Git Pages but would be interested in WebMention and other more advanced capabilities if offered by another platform / static-site generator.

  • I've toyed with the idea of self-hosting the blog (on AWS or something), while still using an SSG of some kind. There could be some benefits with adding more dynamic content or having more autonomy over my site but not sure if it'd be worth additional costs or headache trying to manage.

  • Writing (or generally producing "content") has always been something I do out of pure enjoyment but I've considered trying to monetize in some way. What are some platform considerations if I wanted to monetize say, a podcast, newsletter, video courses, premium articles, etc...

--

Other adjacent properties I'm looking to "re-design"...

  • My is currently hosted on , which I have liked so far but I'd like to further embrace the Fediverse so have considered moving to . Any advice on hosted vs. self-hosted? Are there other non-Castopod fediverse options?

  • As of right now, my presence in the Fediverse is mostly on infosec.exchange where I post stuff from my site. I've considered hosting my own instance of Mastodon (or something similar) to be my main account or even just as an official "shellsharks the site" account. I've seen accounts of people going down this path and ultimately bailing due to costs, time overhead, etc...

--

If there are noticeable benefits to making any significant changes I'd be willing to take that on as a project for 2024. Otherwise, I might just stick with what I have and focus on writing/research =). Thanks so much to anyone who takes the time to read / respond!

I'm looking for a good way to move a few pages to and . Some have 10+ years and thousands of posts.

Forced by the UE Fakebook has a export tool, but I'm having issues with a JSON export, and anyway it does not contain shares, nor... links from the posts. This is not really accaptable.

Question is; is there any better way to liberate this content? Preferably a free way to copy posts, with 'attached' links, images. Ideally; including shares and comments.

In case you missed it, you can turn any blog into a server on the Fediverse, so that people on Mastodon etc will be able to follow your blog.

There's lots of info on how to do this (plus common questions anwered) at:

The software that makes this possible is called "ActivityPub for WordPress", it's just been updated to v 1.3.0 now with support for threaded comments:

Hi, Fedifolks, I've got several self hosted blogs on a network setup. It's protected by wordfence as an application firewall. I've added the plug in. When I follow a user it just goes into a pending state and doesn't change. There's no option on the wordpress side to accept users.
Anyone know how to fix this or have experience fixing it?

I wrote an eBook about refactoring WordPress plugins. This book is for experienced WordPress developers who want to improve their plugins, use new modern best practices and adopt test-driven development.

This book contains no foo and bar. All the example code is based on code in plugins I've worked on. Also, it is not very long. It's not an introduction to WordPress development, it's about improving the PHP code you write.

Stripped out the Automattic plugins I had running on my wordpress site, and then pulled all the other bullshit plugins trying to tell me how to optimize ("The title "Horrors and Abominations" does not have enough emotional or surprising words in it."). My posting experience is already improved.

@miriamrobern Jumping back into this conversation about preventing the #Automattic #Jetpack plugin for self-hosted #WordPress sites from phoning home to power new AI bullshit.

Turns out the AI will get your information from what is called the "Firehose" and that's been enabled by default for years. 🤦‍♀️

But it's easy to disable once you know how to find the fucking option.

If you're interested, here's how you do that:

Just though you might want to know. 💖
