New instance means I copy-paste my #introduction from my previous instance lol. So here’s my #intro!
I’m Bryn, (she/her, 25) and I live in the greater Pittsburgh area! I’m a #bisexual, #polyamorous#trans girl with a passion for #electronics, #music (especially #indie), and human interaction, i.e. #communication. I’m happiest when I’m among friends, lovers, or just other people in general!
I was a team lead in customer facing tech support for a home security company, but I gave that up after facing major #burnout. Now, I’m taking a few months to recuperate while my partners keep me alive, and I’m looking to start a #freelance#branding and #WebDesign co-op with one of said partners!

"Readers evaluate the intelligence of an author not only by the quality of their arguments but also by how well they understand what the author is trying to say. Using simple words and sentences makes the point clear. Big words don’t make writing sound intelligent; they make it hard to understand." #psychology#communication#intelligence#understanding
Probably unpopular point of view: I hate the phrase “science communicator” & always have. We don’t have history or policy communicators - just historians and policy experts who can share their subject. Saying science needs a “communicator” just serves to isolate it as a weird hard thing that needs special magic powers to access. It implies that communication isn’t a normal part of science, but it is (or should be). Also, it undervalues teachers, who communicate science all the time. #science
@helenczerski I get and like your view. #Communication is a key part of any endeavour and should be a default task and skill. However, as a Corporate Communicator I too often see functions / roles who don’t get this and may not have the motivation and / or skills to properly communicate their messages / results / needs to others.
I know they say video is so, SO important on social platforms, but honestly? if I'm going to click on a video & take the time to watch it, you'd better give me a damn good idea that it'll be worth it - and no, the "first 8 seconds" or whatever won't catch me either; I ALWAYS disable autoplay. Because it fucking sucks.
This is just personal preference, I know - but on the other hand, I don't flatter myself that I'm particularly unique...
(Let's try this again bc something with the Markdown got fucky.)

If you have a video that conveys some information and doesn't provide any other value than conveying information, there is absolutely no reason for that video to exist. All of it could be conveyed via a blog post. Or give me a transcript. I can very easily get through a transcript of a video in less than five minutes for something that could take 30-45 minutes of my time.
Scientists at the University of Alabama looked at stigma on Twitter after Trump's reference to the xenophobic phrase "Chinese virus". After his Tweet, there was a 10x increase in use of such phrases in Tweets and the portion of Tweets about COVID-19 using such phrases. These results point to the way a prominent figure can influence the spread of stigma online.
We see a return of #soundMoney as one of the few thing that can help us to stop the speculation and abject pollution and waste in our current economic system.
That and a decentralised social space like #fediverse (specifically no longer Mastodon as the devs are clearly compromised) and an ethical internet to support it, ie. #I2P.
Seems like a good day for a reminder of how quick studios are to screw over writers. In 1999, NBC moved a series from their regular network to Sci Fi Channel. My pay went from $240,000 to $0. Because my contract paid "per broadcast episode" instead of just "per episode."
...then users decided exactly when to watch the show. 😞
US law seems to be outdated in contrast, if this is the whole story:
"#Broadcasting#Law and #Legal Definition
Pursuant to 47 #USCS § 153 (6), Title 47. Telegraphs, Telephones, and Radiotelegraphs; Chapter 5. [#Wire or Radio #Communication; General Provisions] the term #broadcasting means “the dissemination of radio communications intended to be received by the public, directly or by the..."
The FCC Is Supposed to Protect the Environment. It Doesn’t.
The agency is mandated to safeguard the #environment from damage caused by communication #infrastructure. But when companies want to add new cell phone towers, build on protected land or launch satellites, the agency typically does little or nothing.
If, as Ursula Le Guin argues in Telling Is Listening, human #communication is #intersubjective and mutual, and involves a continuous interchange between two (or more) consciousnesses - like what happens when amoebas have sex ... what exactly is going on when we communicate with #AI / #SALAMI chatbots that simulate a conscious partner in communication but neither understand their own utterances nor accept and learn from interchange with a user?
Toxic #Filipino parenting culture: not giving your kids the chance to explain themselves whenever they make mistakes or don't agree with you. Instead, you just yell at them and worse, call them names.
If the intention is to make them fear you so that they don't make the same mistake again, maybe it will work. But in the long run, it can lead to #trauma that can haunt them even in adulthood.
I think parents who yell at their children just don't know how to communicate or if they do, they can't control their emotions so they resort to yelling.
Thus, no matter how good of a communicator you are, if you have low EQ, you'll still end up not communicating well.
So maybe mastering one's emotions is the master skill that we need to learn. How does one become a #MasterOfEmotions? 🤔
