It doesn't matter if you are new to the or if you have been here forever, it's always good to keep in mind that (a) what server you pick, and (b) what software that server runs, matter.

I should admit am fairly new at this. I created my first fediverse account only a year ago. It was a server with about 8,000 users. And while it "worked" there was something missing from the experience.

While researching the idea of hosting my own server, I discovered which in turn led to discovering . It's hard to describe how much better the experience is with IceShrimp.

The is just so much better, and the feature set way more robust. The way it handles replies, the ability to quote, to use multiple emojis, etc.

If you have friends or family thinking about joining the Fediverse or are feeling unimpressed with your mastodon experience, I highly recommend getting an account running IceShrimp or other similar software.

Probably also worth mentioning that I also looked at using a integration and and . I found them to be clunky; reminding me of how email was in the early 90s.

If the fediverse is going to thrive, then it needs to make a good first impression. Moving beyond mastodon is a good step in the right direction.

No really.. They're literally asking for it,

Ok, I could be reading too much into it, but it really would be nice if maybe I wasn't the only one that mentioned maybe it's something they should look into?

kthx,

tyil,

@mousey Replace with something more performant, reliable, and less resource intensive like . Similarly, is probably the least attractive choice to promote for the . The interface is clunky, and hosting it is ridiculously expensive for large userbases. Consider or instead. Much easier to setup and maintain!

The more I experiment with and more broadly, the more I am convinced that it’s possible to build a replacement on the

Patreon is a closed platform, but it’s a key tool for many content creators to make a living out of their work: writers, video makers, podcasters, and so on

A Fediverse alternative would basically bridges a payment system with tiered access based on payment status

Even with , I think it could already be done!

tyil,

@o_simardcasanova Compromising one proprietary tool for another seems like a pretty dumb move, though. You're not really improving the situation here, which makes me wonder why you're promoting of all potential solutions.

Also, the remark on is mostly due to your post portraying as the only potential platform to move to, which is disingenuous and rude to the Fediverse as a whole, which existed before Mastodon even became a thing.

It looks like the #Japanese made #ActivityPub platform #Misskey is soon to take over #Mastodon in the number of forks.

See: https://codeberg.org/fediverse/delightful-fediverse-apps/issues/47

As an #Asian myself, I'm happy to see that ideas, developers, and software from #Japan are going mainstream. There are a lot of things the West, and the world for that matter, can learn from Japan.

Not only from the Japanese, to be exact, even from #Korean made software. I talked about last year how #Korea created its own Internet culture that not even #Google and #Microsoft can compete with. (See: #Naver's amazing interconnected platforms; what Google would have been if they had a vision.)

A bit related to the original post, regarding Japanese-made software/platform.

If I am not mistaken, is also a Fediverse software from by a developer.

Extra:

Pleroma itself also have a lot of forks, though not as much as and . One such is .

You can give the Rebased fork a try over at https://c.wtf featuring the frontend. ( that the Soapbox frontend originally started as a custom frontend for Mastodon?)

@youronlyone I don't think @lain (who is the creator and lead dev of ) is Asian, he's German.

Though I think I remember reading somewhere that he has an Asian wife. Might be wildly wrong on that though, so take that with a huge grain of asin :koakuma_giggle:

Do any of the platforms have a function to swipe through a whole timeline of media/photos? I mean like in one post with several photos you can click/swipe through them, this function for a whole timeline.

Any Mastodon kompatible app? Maybe hidden somewhere in Pleroma?

I'm really pleased to see so much variety in the #ActivityPub space, but I'm not sure that having more and more #pleroma and #Misskey forks, none of which seem to have a solid reliable management structure, is that great an idea.

The Fedilab Android app has a shiny new update. Posts that are too long can now be split into multiple entries and posted at the same time.

Also there are some nice accessibility related features:

  • Option to underline links in messages.

  • Option to always show the scrollbar, instead of hiding when not in use.

Thanks to the devs for this great app that keeps getting better.

Yesterday I tried to setup my own version of OCRbot@fedi.lynnesbian.space, which does on pictures attached to posts on the , which I find an intriguing idea. During the process to set this up I was lazy and asked to guide me through the whole process, which is fairly easy to be honest, but I an playing around with this for fun.

I wanted to run the OCR on my own server, because I like to run on my own tech too.

So I asked Chatty to guide me and it worked well, I logged in with the Python bot and wanted to start it and got an API error, it was only then when I told ChatGPT that I am actually trying this with Frienidca and that the API might have its limits.
I then looked up the API documentation of the Mastodon API that Friendica implemented and asked ChatGPT if there is any essential parts missing that are needed to run the bot.

ChatGPT 'read' the documentation of both, the bot and the Mastodon API of Friendica and explained:
"Since Friendica doesn't support the Mastodon streaming API, the OCRbot, which relies on these endpoints, may not be compatible with Friendica without significant modifications to either the bot or the Friendica server."

Just wanted to write a bit about this experience with Friendica, the bot and ChatGPT.

Maybe I will setup a instance for this, a single user instance for me and the bot, maybe better a Mastodon instance?
