In 1894, a Boston man bet another $20K that no woman could travel around the world by bicycle.

So Annie Cohen Kopchovsky, then penniless, learned to bike & set out to prove him wrong & earn prize money.

From 1894-95, she did just that (sailing between continents). Kopchovsky kept her husband & family a secret, using the alias Londonderry. She won $10K for her accomplishment & returned to raise her family.

“I think [bicycling] has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. I stand & rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel. It gives woman a feeling of freedom & self-reliance. It makes her feel as if she were independent. The moment she takes her seat she knows she can’t get into harm unless she gets off her bicycle & away she goes, the picture of free, untrammeled womanhood.”

“I use a wheelchair and I want more bike lanes”:

  1. Many disabled people use bikes.
  2. Many of us consider our electric bikes, scooters and trikes to be mobility devices.
  3. Lots of people cannot drive
  4. More people using cycleways means fewer cars on the road, which makes it easier for disabled and chronically ill people who use cars

Visiting the Norwegian city of Bergen, I cycled along a stunning 3-km bike path blasted through a mountain.

It's the longest bike tunnel in the world -- and a centerpiece of Bergen's plans to reduce driving.

I wrote about it in Bloomberg CityLab.

I’m shook.

Just rode an for the first time. I’ve been intrigued for a while, but figured I would stick with human power for as long as my legs could turn unassisted.

This ride was so much fun and gave me a completely different experience of urban mobility. Only traveled a few miles—from Capitol Hill to Dupont Circle—but it was like being a kid again. Best two-wheeled experience in ages. Face hurts from smiling.

Women are constrained in their use of public space, especially women who bike.

We need to stop tolerating aggressive behavior from people who drive against people who bike.

Just an FYI: If you blame individuals (which are not ) on the I will ask you to leave the instances. We don't do this here.

Don't get me wrong: It's good if individuals do "their part" in tackling the climate crisis, by changing their habits and lifestyles, but blaming them, when its clearly the system's fault is just wrong.

Be , consume sustainably, ride your , don't fly.
There are many good reasons to do so, e.g.:
👉 it's the right thing to do
👉 it's healthy
👉 you're a role-model for others
👉 if many people do this, it slightly changes how companies act.
👉 it fosters your awareness for the issues

But also be aware that its a droplet on a hot stone. Non-wealthy individuals won't fix the climate with their daily choices. We have to demand action by the big players.
And I don't mean blame China!
All of us need to demand radical climate action by our governments.

So please:

peacefully

We can do this together! I know we can.

In August my family did an 8-day camping trip in Southern Ontario, completely car-free. We left our home in Toronto and my parents left their home in Niagara on bikes, and we did this lovely loop along the shore of Lake Erie. A thread about our trip!

Cargo bikes are the future of deliveries!

I've been saying this for some time now. Never thought I'd see a US department say the same — but the NYC Department of transportation just did! And it's not the first time I've seen them post some really good stuff about bikes. This gives me hope.
