A Murder Story: Whatever Happened to Interoperability? The eminent Cory Doctorow, @pluralistic, accurately reveals the murder of by tech giants in this new post. Long, but totally worth a read. Here’s a sample: “Interoperability wasn’t killed by the reverse-engineer-proof computer nor by the lack of market demand for aftermarket modifications. It was killed by regulatory capture, arising from market concentration, arising from the bad idea that monopolies are efficient sources of consumer welfare, rather than deep-pocketed rent-seekers who leverage their scale to extinguish rivals, corrupt our politics, harm workers, and gouge customers.” https://www.theamericanconservative.com/a-murder-story-whatever-happened-to-interoperability/

Bandcamp has been sold to Songtradr. What does this mean for the musicians? - “…I work at Bandcamp. We’re all very frightened and don’t know what the future holds. So let me get this straight… collects massive amounts of data, the platform is full of brands and celebrities, AND it uses an algorithm-driven feed. It tracks users, serves ads, and has quickly filled up, according to reports, with trolls, Nazis and the far right. Oh, and the site makes a shadow account for everyone with an Instagram profile, whether they want to participate or not. But still new users are flocking to the platform?? It’s a case of FOMO, and I don’t think it will last. F*ck Zuck and the corporate trojan horse he rode in on. Very disappointed in those I know who have bought the BS. That’s all I have to say on the matter.

Catherine Russell, the head of UNICEF, said this week that of the 600,000 children in Rafah, southern Gaza, all of them are either injured, or sick, or malnourished. Much of the Gaza population has been forced south to Rafah by the Israeli military, which had promised them it was a safe zone. She added, “Over 200 days of war have already killed and maimed tens of thousands of children in Gaza.”

Get out the popcorn and find a comfortable seat, this should be interesting. https://www.dawn.com/news/1813028

Oregon bill would decriminalize homeless encampments and propose penalties if unhoused people are harassed or ordered to leave | This makes me very happy, as it puts the onus of dealing with the population exactly where it should be - on society in general and local municipalities specifically. If you don’t want the in your downtown, provide them a safe space elsewhere. It’s our responsibility as a society to care for our homeless citizens, it is society that has failed them in most cases. So instead of NIMBY vigilantes at all levels punting the population from one place or another, it’s long past time to deal with the crisis head on and provide the space for their tents, tiny houses and warming centers during harsh winters, cooling centers during blazing summers, and access to service at all times. Proud of my state: and proud of our Governor, Tina Kotek, who with her first lady constitute our first same sex first couple. https://www.cnn.com/2023/04/28/us/oregon-homeless-camp-bill/index.html

Two models powered by roll off line in China https://cnevpost.com/2023/12/28/2-evs-powered-by-sodium-batteries-roll-off-line/ “Two electric vehicle (EV) models powered by sodium-ion batteries have rolled off the production line in China, signaling that the new, lower-cost batteries are closer to being used on a large scale.

A model powered by sodium-ion batteries built by Farasis Energy in partnership with JMEV, an EV brand owned by Jiangling Motors Group, rolled off the assembly line on December 28,”

@auscandoc With the rapidly, truly dramatic falling prices of Lithium across the globe and the lower density of sodium-ion, the value proposition of these new batteries is being tested. We are in early stages, so it will be interesting to see how battery tech plays out over the next couple of years. The discovery of massive new Lithium deposits, like this one in the USA https://finance.yahoo.com/news/worlds-largest-deposit-lithium-may-231936498.html#:~:text=The%20world's%20largest%20deposit%20of%20lithium%20may%20have%20just%20been,border%20of%20Nevada%20and%20Oregon, have changed the game. Sodium-ion batteries require less destructive mining, but that said…”Battery materials like lithium, nickel and cobalt are infinitely recyclable. The critical materials in lithium-ion EV batteries can be recycled over and over without performance loss.”
