This is an (β pic b) orbiting its host .

The is directly observed over 17 years by various instruments with different size of coronographs (the black disk in the occulting the star).

From 2004 to 2010 and from 2016 to 2018, the planet is too close to the star such as it is also behind the .

β pic b is a young (12Myr) massive planet (~10Mjup) with period of ~20 yr 🪐

Newly discovered scorching exoplanet has metal clouds that act like a mirror, raining titanium (www.esa.int)

Data from ESA’s exoplanet mission Cheops has led to the surprising revelation that an ultra-hot exoplanet that orbits its host star in less than a day is covered by reflective clouds of metal, making it the shiniest exoplanet ever found.

Using ESO's Very Large , astronomers have observed a dark spot on for the first time from Earth.

They used an instrument called MUSE, which in a nutshell takes thousands of images at different colours or wavelengths in one shot 🌈

This helped astronomers determine the height of the spot within Neptune's atmosphere and why it appears dark.

I went to space and discovered an enormous lie | Ron Garan

What astronaut Ron Garan saw in space changed his life forever – here’s what it taught him.

A curious phenomenon often occurs when astronauts travel to space and look out on our planet for the first time: They see how interconnected and fragile life on Earth is, and they feel a sudden responsibility to protect it.

AMAZON DESTROYS UNSOLD PRODUCTS BY THE MILLIONS

TVs, laptops, household items, books and even face masks still sealed in their original packaging -- all like-new products that Amazon directs its warehouses to destroy rather than reuse or redistribute. One ex-employee says they were told their "target" was to destroy over 100,000 items every week.

Overall, 50% of all items are unopened and still in their shrink wrap. The other half are returns and in good condition. Staff have just become numb to what they are being asked to do."

Most of us were already aware of the harm our does to us and our -- but this is a whole new level of unnecessary , and it needs to stop.

Why was the Search for #Extraterrestrial Intelligence (#SETI) 👽 unsuccessful so far ?

#Life 🦠 appeared pretty much as soon as it could, right when the #oceans formed and our #planet stopped being a molten 🌋 hellscape. That might have been as early as 3.7 billion years ago. But #intelligent life appeared basically yesterday—what we identify as anatomically modern humans arose about 120,000 years ago. https://arstechnica.com/space/2023/05/were-essentially-alone-in-the-universe-and-thats-ok

As renders our uninhabitable, erupts in more regions of our , and rushed new technologies are appropriated by billionaire sociopaths, each of us will invariably be affected, and drawn to face impossible dilemmas and difficult ethical decisions.

If you haven't started yet, now is probably the time to learn as much as we can, especially about ourselves, our societies, lessons from , and work on our skills to persevere with empathy, altruism and kindness.

I am equal parts for the arrival of second grandchild (one of only two boys born into the immediate family in over 60 years) and mortified at the prospects these new beings will face on this .

Celebrating and relieved all went well in the high-risk pregnancy…and wondering what I can fight/change to make a better world for him (and his sister).

50 years ago, I thought that if we could just stop making wars, cold or otherwise, we would be alright.

40 years ago, I thought science would see us through any challenges we would face.

30 years ago, I thought it was all about making a cleaner planet.

20 years ago, I worried that the rise of fundamentalism and our response to perceived threats would be our downfall.

For the past decade l, have realized that a clean but overheated planet would still yield disastrous results.

And now, back to wars, fundamentalism, anti-science/anti-social tendencies…and a wee bit of disaster ever present.

This is not good news. At all.

"Earth’s life support systems have been so damaged that the is “well outside of the safe operating space for humanity”, scientists have warned. Their assessment found that six out of nine “planetary boundaries” had been broken because of human-caused and destruction of the natural world. "
