molly0xfff, "In 2024, for the first time, it finally feels like we have a critical mass of people and platforms who are interested in rewilding the internet to bring back what we lost, and create something new. ... There's a palpable feeling that this just might be the year of the open web."
is this feeling... hope? https://activitypub.ghost.org/day-0/
matt, My number one #Mastodon tip for people is to boost more!
Discovery sucks on Mastodon, which is partially by design, but it also means it’s hard to find new and interesting people here. If you see something cool, reach for that boost button as well!
Chris, @matt Then tip number 2 should be for people to mute more (which some might do now with me). Boosts are good for discovery. But one also discovers a lot of people that aren't your cup of tea. Keep them out of your feed by muting them.
matt, @Chris Totally agreed. Mute folks who you don’t enjoy as much.
mike, I think that fully integrating #ActivityPub into Flipboard's backend is going to be one of the best things we've done since we started the company.
There are three phases:
Phase 1 (Today): Federate 25 accounts to test and learn
Phase 2 (January): Enable anyone in the Fediverse to engage with any public curator on Flipboard
Phase 3 (April): Enable anyone on Flipboard to follow and engage with any public account in the #Fediverse

Flipboard, (edited ) @cliffwade @mike Hi Cliff! You can find all the federated accounts in our pinned thread here: https://flipboard.social/@Flipboard/111602567919878918
mike, @cliffwade we'll continue to federate some accounts between now and January which we'll announce. When we do phase 2 the list will be hundreds of thousands of accounts globally.

BBC Launches A Mastodon Instance (social.bbc)
Hi! 👋 Here's our #introduction. We're BBC Research & Development; we explore and test new technology to discover how the BBC can best make use of it in the future. For 100 years our engineers have been at the forefront of developments in broadcasting. We're now researching how everyone could get TV & radio via the internet...
OC You can now get Kbin-it, my Reddit-like theme for kbin! (userstyles.world)
It doesn't have much to offer, the code is a mess, but I know some people would really appreciate it!...
pixelfed, Loops is a new platform for sharing short videos, and it's open source + federated using #ActivityPub
We're really excited to share this sneak peek that showcases the new onboarding flow and discovery features (Connect Mastodon) and look forward to the upcoming beta release!
Are you ready for #Loops ?
arunshah240, @pixelfed ok I'm waiting
TuxOnBike, It will not be algorithm-free: https://mastodon.social/@dansup/112331431372219817
Maybe instances and users can opt out. I did not check that.
Lemmy and Kbin: The Best Reddit Alternatives? (www.pcmag.com)
Love Reddit but tired of what's happening to it? We check out Lemmy and Kbin, two open-source fediverse alternatives that are growing fast.
spreadmastodon, 🔥 We are excited to let everyone know that our full website is now live!
We hope this will be an easy way for new users to get started with #Mastodon & join the wider #Fediverse & an organizing hub to build & spread a better, more open social web of ALL fediverse offerings.
With the #RedditMigration in full force & the likely #Barcelona launch bringing new attention to the Fediverse it is all the more urgent to help #TakeBackSocial
spreadmastodon, @spreadmastodon @fediversereport
Shortly we will be opening up all the code used in this website to a full Open Source license.
Not everything would apply, but we would hope this open source code could be used by anyone building out a similar onboarding portals for the Fedi.
For example: #Calkey, #Pixelfed, #Kbin or #Bookwyrm or
#Goldfish or other sites may find parts of the code here useful and not have to rebuild EVERYTHING from scratch.
mike, @spreadmastodon @spreadmastodon @fediversereport this is completely awesome and exactly the kind of thing the fediverse needs right now. Bravo!!!!
peertube, We tried to simulate 1000 viewers on a #PeerTube video, and then on a livestream. (Note that 99% of twitch livestreams are under 1000 simultaneous views.)
We optimized accordingly... And here are the results: it works!
With a ~20$ server, PeerTube can now support such usecases.

pragmakist,
Chocobozzz, @Arcaik @peertube PeerTube uses multiple cores. NodeJS can use multiple threads using worker threads: https://nodejs.org/api/worker_threads.html
andresmh, Do you know librarians who have created Mastodon instances?
A librarian at my institution is interested in advocating for creating one. It might be helpful to read about other librarians' experiences doing this or the existence of some other cases managed by libraries.

On Reddit and it’s federated rivals, Lemmy and kbin (www.jayeless.net)
As you may have heard, Reddit’s decided to pull a Twitter and start charging an extortionate amount of money for access to their previously-free API, in order to drive third-party clients like Apollo and RIF into extinction. Under Reddit’s proposed pricing, …
Take a bow, developers of kbin.social
Hats off, guys. I can't even imagine how hard it must have been for you guys to keep kbin.social up and running since yesterday....
mastodonmigration, (edited ) Mastodon News
In case you missed it, this is huge!
Folks, perhaps the biggest Fediverse news of the week (the month? year?) is that the W3C @w3c, essentially the main standards organization for the internet, has shut down its social media presence on Twitter and moved to Mastodon, and is encouraging others to do the same.
"W3C has posted that we are no longer active on X/Twitter and have directed all our followers here to Mastodon." >>> https://w3c.social/@w3c/111534700276754588
bortzmeyer, @mastodonmigration @w3c "the organization that manages the entire internet" No, absolutely no. This sentence is so absurd that you should correct your toot.
bruce, @mastodonmigration @w3c
Here's more w3c accounts you can follow.

peertube, We're proud to release PeerTube v5.2 with a huge technical achievement: remote transcoding!
Now even low-power and cheap servers can run a #PeerTube instance.
Also: choose visibility of livestream replays, improved a11y, etc.
Check out: https://joinpeertube.org/news/release-5.2
peertube, @gmate8 It is not on the v6 / 2023 roadmap... https://joinpeertube.org/news/roadmap-v6
But we hope that we'll have good news to announce for the v7 / 2024 roadmap... We'll know by the end of the year.
luttyz, @peertube oh my god this is awesome :blobfoxwhoaa:
congrats to everyone who's worked (and who works) on PeerTube, this is huge! :blobfoxheart:

What is Kbin - Join the Fediverse (joinfediverse.wiki)
Kbin is a modular, decentralized content aggregator and microblogging platform running on the Fediverse network. The initiative aims to promote a free and open internet.
jwildeboer, If some people say the #fediverse is a left-progressive project, it only shows how successful we collectively are to block the Nazis. Loads of far-right instances and users exist in the fediverse. Gab, anyone? But defederation and blocking makes that part invisible to most of us. They still exist and federate amongst themselves. ActivityPub, the protocol, is neutral. We decide what we want and not want. The fediverse is a herd of Venn diagrams, not a closed circle.
dalias, @jwildeboer In my book, "the fediverse" is defined by what's actually federated, not by what speaks a protocol that would allow it to be federated if not for being blocked by everyone. So no, Gab is absolutely not part of "the fediverse".
StanWonn, @jwildeboer @mekkaokereke Having tried out several of the “Twitter alternatives” over the past few months, I think that Mastodon is much less of an “echo chamber” than the others. So I think your point is well taken.
mho, There it is: #ARD, the biggest public broadcaster in the world, opened its own instance for #Mastodon today – https://ard.social
Its flagship news programme gets the first account: @tagesschau.On #Twitter the #Tagesschau has 4 million Followers, I am curious, how much it gets here and how fast. Could give us a hint on how active the german community on #Mastodon still is. The inoffical @tagesschau had amassed 53k Followers, the other public broadcaster @ZDF 13k in three weeks.
(🧵 1/4)
mho, Some days ago, the ones responsible told me, that this is an experiment. They want to try it out, and see where it goes. There are no explicit goals, but they will track, how many visitors will come to their site through the links posted here.
They'll also keep the other instance https://dev.ard.social, where they will test and develop stuff. They want to contribute to #Mastodon and the #Fediverse. Code will be published on the GitHub-Account of the #NDR: https://github.com/NorddeutscherRundfunk

jab01701mid, @Em0nM4stodon @wikipedia Also, donate money to help - it's been about a year since I did, so thanks for the reminder to chip in for what is of value !
The Germans are taking over my feed because they are using the Boost function very efficiently, arent they?
Guten tag Hans, we need better transmission and Schlachtschiffkanone.
feditips, (edited ) If you're transferring your Mastodon account to another server, don't use the "Archive Request" button for transfers.
This button is not used in the transfer process, it's only there for you to download a copy of your data for personal use. The archive produced by this button cannot be uploaded to Mastodon.
There's a step-by-step guide to the full transfer process (including transferring followers, follows, mutes, blocks and bookmarks) at https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server.
feditips, p.s. Just to make clear, it is a good idea to download an archive, it just isn't used in the transfer process. The idea of the archive is to have a personal copy of everything you've posted.
The archive isn't currently readable by Mastodon, but it is readable by other software. Another Fediverse platform Calckey is currently testing a feature that lets you import posts from your old Mastodon account to your new Calckey account, and this uses your Mastodon archive.
nader, @feditips Recently I've made a tool to re-post your old posts from an archive, until import is available. Here are the details:

mike, Hello Fediverse!
Today we're taking another important step in our journey to fully federate Flipboard.
This morning we federated 1,000 Flipboard Magazines curated by the publishers we have been testing federation with in addition to 20 new publishers we are federating today. These include magazines like Adventure Travel by Outside, Eater DC by Eater, Explore NYC by Thrillist, Throwbacks by SPIN, and Climate Tech by Bloomberg.
Flipboard Magazines are a simple way to curate articles, images, videos and podcasts into a thematic feed. This powerful curation tool has been at the heart of Flipboard since 2012 with millions of magazines curated since about recipes, road trips, architecture, books, tech trends and so much more.
Federated magazines become native #ActivityPub feeds and can be followed by anyone on Mastodon. For example, check out my Following the Fediverse magazine @following
I believe that thoughtfully curated feeds have the power to make social media a lot more effective and inspiring so I'm excited to bring millions of these magazines to the #Fediverse as we federate all public curators in the next few weeks.
Check out my Medium post for more details along with a list of some of the great magazines we federated today.
