's wanting to federate with the (if that will ever happen 🤞🏻) is a form of . A large corporate shopping mall settles in a nice neighborhood with small local run shops and community centers. The new shopping small says 'if we settle here, more people will come, and you all will benefit'. A few years later all small shops are bankrupt and the community is destroyed. What remains is a barren corporate landscape.

With the upcoming Fediverse service, there has been a, well, robust discussion of how to avoid threats looming. Those advocating mass-preemptive defederation make three cases for it.

➡️ To avoid data mining ...which Defederation does virtually zero to avoid any big tech entity scraping all the fedi public social graph today - Want proof?
see: https://is.gd/q8U2pv

The next argument is about poorly moderated P92 user posts and ad spam.
Which I'll discuss next.

Meta is proposing a paid option to opt-out of advertising on Instagram and Facebook. It's basically extortion to have your right to protected.

Ads can and should be delivered without resorting to illegal that violates users' rights and exposes them to predatory or discriminatory advertising.

If can't conduct their business legally, that should be their problem to solve not ours.

The EU bans Meta's use of personal data for behavioural advertising.

The European Data Protection Board said Wednesday it had adopted a binding decision that will ban Facebook and Instagram owner Meta from using the personal data of users for targeted advertisements.

Earlier this year Norway imposed a ban on sending Facebook and Instagram users targeted advertisements based on their personal data.

In one media article after another we read about how Threads and Bluesky are "decentralized social media platforms." Guess what, you are not "decentralized" if you only have one "centralized" server.

Can we please stop giving and credit for being platforms when all they have done is announce the intention to actually someday be decentralized. Both are currently entirely corporate platforms.

I got a notification on that plans to use my posts etc. for training and said they were using the Legitimate Interest justification for doing it.

I sent in an objection stating that using data for training AI doesn't fall within the remit of what a user might reasonably expect the company to do with my data on the basis of the service being provided: https://www.gdpreu.org/the-regulation/key-concepts/legitimate-interest/

They have upheld my objection and will not use my data. So you can do it too!

People talk hard about blocking Threads because of numerous privacy issues / surveillance capitalism reasons.

but, I'm likely blocking them for much more boring reasons.... They have hundreds of TBs of storage, unlimited bandwidth and a marketing budget (5 million people signed by in the first few hours).

has the ability to simple price administrators out of the market - using the classic method of just outspending your enemy with a dumptruck of money - Simply by existing in the same ecosystem as us, they can and will increase our server/storage costs until admins like myself drop out. (THANK YOU PATRONS/SUPPORTERS)

If I wanted to open communicate with -- I fear I simply won't be able to play the same game as them for very long.... and I foresee plenty of other admins dropping out for that reason

A clear victory for the free fediverse: Meta now says integrating with ActivityPub is "a long way out" (privacy.thenexus.today)

When Meta launched their new Twitter competitor Threads on July 5, they said that it would be compatible with the ActivityPub protocol, Mastodon, and all the other decentralized social networks in the fediverse "soon"....

Meta has started rolling out Threads, the Twitter competitor that was previously known under project names such as Barcelona and P92.

For now, it's only available in a few countries: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.instagram.barcelona

Here are some pictures of what we can expect.

how long until threads threatens to or actually does start blocking mastodon.social for allowing nudity?

would dot social bend the knee in that scenario and change their policy? probably

https://help.instagram.com/914046486923176

Post photos and videos that are appropriate for a diverse audience. We know that there are times when people might want to share nude images that are artistic or creative in nature, but for a variety of reasons, we don’t allow nudity on Instagram. This includes photos, videos, and some digitally-created content that show sexual intercourse, genitals, and close-ups of fully-nude buttocks. It also includes some photos of female nipples, but photos in the context of breastfeeding, birth giving and after-birth moments, health-related situations (for example, post-mastectomy, breast cancer awareness or gender confirmation surgery) or an act of protest are allowed. Nudity in photos of paintings and sculptures is OK, too. People like to share photos or videos of their children. For safety reasons, there are times when we may remove images that show nude or partially-nude children. Even when this content is shared with good intentions, it could be used by others in unanticipated ways. You can learn more on our Tips for Parents page.
Sexually explicit or violent media must be marked as sensitive or with a content warning This includes content that is particularly provocative even if it may not show specific body parts, as well as dead bodies, bloody injuries, and other gore. Particularly obscene content may be prohibited entirely. Profile pictures and header images may not contain sexually explicit or violent media.

OC I designed and rendered a couple of icons for the magazines I started, and I’d like to share some behind the scenes images with y'all. I’m also open to doing a few more of these in future.

So I 3D modelled two icons (well, illustrations rather) for the communities that I created on kbin: Industrial Design and Jewelry Design. These icons are meant to reimagine kbin’s logo in a way that's relevant to each community....

thenexusofprivacy, (edited ) to Polls

Two polls about federating with Threads (1/2)

Threads (a fairly new social network from Facebook's parent company Meta) is testing integration with the fediverse.

Opinions differ on whether or not this is a good thing.

Some people think this is great: if all goes well, it's an opportunity for people on Mastodon, Pixelfed, Misskey, and other fediverse platfirms to follow (and eventually communicate with) friends and public figures on Threads.

Others see it as a threat -- because of Meta's long history of exploiting people's data without consent, hosting hate groups and harassers, discriminating against LGBTQ+ people, Black activists, and Palestinians, and contributing to genocides.

When the prospect of Threads federating was first discussed last summer, most polls showed that opinions were roughly split.

What do people think now that it's getting real?

This poll asks about what you personally plan to do; the followon poll asks about what you want your instance to do.

My five cent about talking to when they sign an , and esp. Gargron's comment that “knowing is better than not knowing”:

Picking some people as leaders (regardless whether they really are or not ) and giving them privileged access to information, platforms, resources is a standard adversarial tactic to break community organizing.

Put in organizing terms: If you're invited to the boss's office, de-brief afterwards. If you can't de-brief, don't go.

I feel we have to make this relevant to USians given how low the exchange rate of Palestinian lives to the US Dollar is: Think of it this way, this probably means your credit score is also affected by the people in your WhatsApp groups.
