Any N.K. Jemisin fans who haven’t read this short story collection, I highly recommend it!
In the introduction, she discusses her initial reluctance to write short stories, and how she came to see the value, as both art and a place to explore what becomes longer fiction. (It’s hard to miss the beginnings of some of her later work peeking through these pieces!)
Neil Gaiman said “Short stories are tiny windows into other worlds and other minds and other dreams. They are journeys you can make to the far side of the universe and still be back in time for dinner.” In our latest feature, longtime contributor Pravesh Bhardwaj has curated 10 short stories, all freely available to be read online.
For #FollowFriday I warmly recommend @susankayequinn AND her #books.
I appreciate the author's posts very much. And she writes #HopePunk, #CliFi, and #SolarPunk. I had not really an idea what is hidden behind these labels. I've been tiptoeing around the genres for months, worried that it might be too pedagogical, not literary enough.
Then I discovered her #shortStories. Now I'm hooked. Try it, you won't regret it! I want more now. 😊 @reading
Rod Serling, creator of "The Twilight Zone," spent three years as a paratrooper during WWII, and was awarded both a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He later said that his writing career helped him get the war "out of his gut." Shortly after he returned from the Philippines, where he was stationed, he wrote "First Squad, First Platoon," a short story which is being published for the first time today in The Strand. NPR spoke to his daughter, Jodi and his biographer, Nicholas Parisi, about the story and how it's connected to Serling's real experiences. To read "First Squad, First Platoon," you'll need to buy the current issue of The Strand or subscribe to the magazine.
In case you missed it, my #solarpunk short story collection is now available in print and ebook!
