Last night, I sat on the cliffs at Rhossili from 10:30pm until 1:30am. I set my camera up to take photos continuously and when I put them all together, this photo was created showing how the Earth rotates in relation to the stars. The star in the middle is Polaris, also known as the North Star. https://www.dansantillo.com/gallery/gower/?photo=DS_311196
Think about a pedestrian/cyclist being hit by a car: the person with the lowest carbon footprint, space use, noise and pollution production hit by a high carbon, space-guzzling, noisy and polluting box of metal.
Roads are for people, not for cars - cars have their uses, but that does not imply that the whole system should be built to satisfy their merest whim.
So well done Wales for making 20mph the default speed limit in residential/built-up areas.
Last night, a dream came true - I saw and captured the Aurora Borealis (aka Northern Lights) over Rhossili Bay. I've had this location in mind for years if the conditions were right. And last night it happened!
Morning all. Bore da. It's St David's Day. Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus! And what better way to celebrate than with a lovely red kite (with parallel translation!). xx
There were plenty of photographs from the April 8 eclipse, but I really like this composite photograph which shows 10 images during the entire eclipse with Katahdin as the foreground. For my friends from Cymru, Katahdin is Maine’s highest peak like your Yr Wyddfa it holds a special place in our hearts. It was never re-named and retains the original native name meaning great Mountain. #maine#Katahdin#YrWyddfa#Wales
OMG! Did someone mention #auroraborealis ? Photos taken just this evening amid the largest geomagnetic storm for two decades. Long exposure, but all visible to the naked eye also, including the colours
With thanks to @timberwraith for letting me know it was happening. Two hours ago I was heading for bed. Once in a lifetime opportunity. So glad I didn't miss it. Thank you! 🙏🏼
#today was special. About 45mins drive from home we visited one of the oldest living things on the planet. I fear for its future, but it’s survived Bronze & Iron Age settlers, Roman legionaries, Christian iconoclasts & modern developers. Cymru-Wales has the largest no. of ancient yews in the world & this yew in Llangernyw is the oldest in Wales, prob. all Europe & thought to be over 4000 yrs old. Will the human induced new climate era be the end of it I wonder? #yew#wales#cymru#ClimateChange
This is the double chambered tomb in Dyffryn Ardudwy, Gwynedd. It’s just behind the village school, just down the hill from another chambered tomb, all in an area just stuffed with more archaeology. (OK, that was quite chatty for a silent Sunday)
If having #children is a belief in the future then ONS data showing the slow decline in 'total fertility' in #England & #Wales has now dropped to 1.49 children... well below the 2.1 replacement rate, is notable!.
Apart from economic issues (future #workforce etc.), this suggests two things:
the costs of having children is becoming prohibitive (from #childcare to #housing costs), and;
looking at their precarious lives prospective parents are deciding no to inflict this on the as yet unborn!
Daily #Wales, walking down on to the beach. But not this week - we have had very high tides, with the sea right up to the dunes (and partly over).
Interesting driving, too, as the tide is no respecter of the A496 between Barmouth and Dolgellau. No pics. Too busy trying to drive while keeping fingers crossed.
And the troglodytes win. With help from the media - Guardian INCLUDED. No one ever looks at the very successful roll out in the Scottish Borders (Conservative council). Grumbles maybe, but I know of no one who wants to go back from safer, more pleasant towns and villages. But what can you expect from a Starmerite?
'However, figures published this week show injuries on the roads fell by a third in the final quarter of last year compared to the same period a year earlier. After a review, the Welsh government agreed to more 30mph exemptions but insisted that most roads should remain at 20mph.’
The hysteria about 20mph was just that - rabble rousing based on no attention to the details. That included Times reporting.
Sore feet after a 12-mile walk this afternoon to a location known as World's End. These three pictures were of the destination, but the stars of the show were cows. Hairy cows. You'd better like cows for the pictures I have to follow 😊
