The craft of knitting Cowichan sweaters is handed down through the generations in First Nations families on Vancouver Island, BC.

Having to sell the sweaters at wholesale prices to shops that mark up the retail cost by hundreds of dollars has led to an initiative called Knit With Purpose to deal direct with buyers and give knitters a fair wage for their time and expertise.

This pattern is both ludicrous and brilliant. It had to be done!

For the friend who found it for me.

I don't think I've shared my Pac-Man sweater on Mastodon yet, but I thought some of y'all might like it.

We've published the pattern and more details on my blog. https://docpop.org/2017/12/pac-man-sweater-made-traditional-icelandic-style/

A desperate plea into the world: does anyone have a single ball (or part ball) of Woolcraft Harvest Chunky in the green (444) colourway?

Mum has finally knit a sweater after years of convincing her that she can... and she's hit yarn chicken before finishing the neckband, and the yarn is now out of stock everywhere. If I could purchase from someone's stash I would be eternally grateful.

I just finished knitting what is maybe the coolest thing I’ve ever knit: a monarch butterfly hat. I haven’t blocked it yet so it’s still a little wibbly but I was just too excited, I had to try it on!

I don't understand how lace is made, but looking at the and pins and patterns ... listen buddy I know math when I see it. This is A Thing. Obviously.

Right away I want to know: Can I encode information in lace?

How much of an expert must one be to make your own patterns?

What about the creation of surfaces?

is more accessible, and people have been exploring math with knitting forever.

But what possibilities does lace offer?

What is the theory of lace?

tatted lace spheres, the threads are starched, these delicate baubles have been used as Christmas ornaments.
More lace ribbons, a simple pattern that contains periodic distortions to the regular grid.
An excerpt from Mathematics Magazine Vol. 91, No. 4 (October 2018), pp. 307-309 Shows I'm hardly the first person to muse about this. Need to get my hands on the rest of this article, obviously. Q: When did it first occur to you that there might be some interesting math behind the lace-making process? VI: It really started when I discovered bobbin lace in my mid-20s. Bobbin lace is complicated, but very logical. It is kind of like doing a Sudoku puzzle. Here, the puzzle is to figure out what threads to braid together and in what order, to find a successful path through the pattern. Q: What does success mean in this context? Does it mean producing a piece that’s aesthetically pleasing or something else? VI: Unlike a pattern for knitting or crochet, a bobbin lace pattern is not expressed as a linear sequence of written steps. A bobbin lace pattern is typically a diagram. There are many possible ways different threads can come together and most of those are not successful, meaning you could end up with too many threads in one area and not Math. Finished boneyard sweethearts! This is the perfect festival sweater as I used yarn from many small dyers for the color work. The base yarn is a sturdy and snuggly Romney from Apple Creek Merinos.

I need to follow more makers, of all kinds. Crafters, bakers, people living their best Ghibli lives.

Anyone got suggestions for me?

I had to prune my feed recently for a few reasons and I want more good connections.

Hi. I'm Jay.

I'm new to microblogging, but I'm going to try it out and see if it sticks. I have a lot of hobbies and figure I might be able to find something to say about them now and again.

I might post about crocheting, knitting, drawing, programming, or any other creative endeavor I happen to pick up.

See you all around.

🙏 REQUEST TO ALL FIBER FOLKS! 🙏

I am recovering from a brain tumor and paralysis, living at longterm care/rehab center (unfortunately, pretty bare-bones sucky) while I learn to walk again.

Part of my recovery is to knit - fine motor skills! But my stash is utterly pathetic, as is my bank account.

If you have a bit of yarn to spare from your stash, could you send me a ball or skein? Thank you greatly for your donation! Address follows. 🙏🧶💞

maybe time for a re- with all the supposed new folks about, since I can't sleep 🫠

hey pals, I'm Lee (ze or he). I'm a programmer for my day job and an artist and crafter in my free time. I'm , queer, nonbinary; (AuDHD) and generally mentally a bit shit; I always aim to be more inclusive and accessible (and open to corrections).

in the art world, I do a lot of on paper and fabric, custom journals, and , , and other . I love to create custom work that's uniquely suited to the recipient.

I live with my wife in the Pacific NW of the US, on an island with fantastic wildlife which I'll occasionally post of, especially . And I don't shut up about the birds and critters in our yard 😄

I'm sure I've forgotten plenty of useful info, so don't hesitate to reach out and get to know me!

boosts appreciated if you've been having a good time following me, but no pressure 💗

I DID IT I DID IT I DID IT!!! WIP #2 (of four) is DONE!

This is a shawl for my dear friend and medical advocate, Sazi. She chose the pattern - Tinsmith, based on the pressed tim patterns of a century ago. Yarn is Shibui Cima and Tweed Silk Cloud, both in caper.

This now goes to the blocking pile, and I'm on to #s three and four. 🥳🧶🌟💞
