@senanthic My Dad liked to quote Branch Rickey: "Luck is the residue of good design."

You were standing there with your camera. Probably thought, "Hey, there might be a lightning strike..." and pushed the shutter release (here's the luck) at just the right instant. A hundred--maybe a thousand--times you've been in the right place but were an instant too soon or too late. But persistence pays off.

Beautiful shot!

sharongascoigne,

My husband had to wait for 6 years to capture this view of #TheNeedles.

Taken as the #moon set at 4.30 am last summer. This shot is only possible a couple of times each year. He almost had it in 2016 but it was slightly too breezy and the telephoto lens couldn't keep in focus.

It causes controversy as some think it's fake, I promise you that it is not. It involved much research, persistence and luck with the weather! It's the cover shot on our 2024 calendar #IsleofWight #photography

redflag,

@sharongascoigne Well done, lots of patience.

IanDSmith,

@sharongascoigne Persistence repaid many times over! Excellent photo.

There are some things that just have to be photographed. This kind of chalk-based street art definitely qualifies. It’s beautiful, whimsical, and sadly, ephemeral.

Landscape Photography doesn’t have to be about getting up early running, up a hill and taking a photo. I can’t do any of those things. These were taken by a road or in my wheelchair in the afternoon, the only time I can sit up. Just do what you can, #Dartmoor #Devon. #photography

Rasta,
@Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

@Rachelburch you are correct. Some of my nicest fall colours and picturesque streams were just ditch photos. In the eye (or camera) of the beholder. It's also not that special when a tree grows in the woods, but when it grows out of a rock or difficult place, it's amazing

The #night #sky in 2023.

This shocking #photography was obtained from #Montana (#USA) over 17 minutes. It reveals the crazy number of #satellites orbiting the #Earth. Most of them are #StarLink (from #SpaceX / #Musk) and aim at providing internet to some remote places.

StarLink is not the only project for space-based #internet: there are also #Kuiper (#Amazon), #oneWeb, #Iris2 (@EU_Commission), etc... which will send even more satellites into #space

@CenturyAvocado@fosstodon.org avatar

@AlexSanterne @EU_Commission why do they strobe in the photo like they stop reflecting a bit at regular intervals on their transit across the sky?

AlexSanterne,
@AlexSanterne@astrodon.social avatar

@RiaResists @EU_Commission I've always seen this project as a way to win the new-space race. The more of those he send, the more difficult it will be for non-SpaceX launchers to find a window...

Providing space-based internet might just be an excuse to take the monopoly of the rocket market.

I was in Seattle visiting friends and on the way back we impromptu wanted to visit Mt. Rainer. I had realized that the moon phase was new and the galaxy core would still be visible so I got my camera out and took this in a random part of the park. This remains to be one of the cleanest photo of the galaxy core I've gotten so far.

Hello mastodon !

MonsieurLu,

brunus,
@brunus@mamot.fr avatar

@Ortie Hello !

OK, Friday night we were looking at the pretty colors and then turned the corner of our house to see this friggin’ thing looming overhead (shown earlier in this thread). We were clearly looking straight into something from space entering earths atmosphere. It only lasted about 5 minutes and dissipated. I think it was a fairly rare “corona” structure, but I have seen them in a fair amount of other photos from Friday. This black and white version is cool.
