I had an epiphany today: Mastodon is my makerspace. I haven't been able to find a makerspace in this area since we moved here in '22, and that's been bugging me. But I scroll through Mastodon and see people's printing, woodworking, electronics, and welding projects, and I admire them, and sometimes I ask questions and learn new techniques. And when I post my own, people do the same.

That's a makerspace.

My proof-of-concept "Single-Unit Hydroponic Grow Bin".

I don't know if it will work. Follow this thread (for the next three months maybe) and grow with me... maybe... or just watch it fail... :P

The goal of this grow-bin is to be:

  • Exceedingly cheap (This comes out to around $11 a unit - reusable - and that's mostly the light. Each additional growth will only be a couple of cents per plant).
  • Exceedingly easy to make.
  • Have as little moving parts as possible.
  • Require as little maintenance as possible while the plant grows.
  • Not require any special space, set-up, or shelving.
  • Be able to stick anywhere you have a couple of inches of spare room indoors, even if you live in a very small amount of floor space.
  • Be powered by wall socket or by external USB battery (for folks that are charging USB batteries with solar cells).
  • If you want to grow more plants... make more of these grow bins and add them wherever you have juuust a bit more space.

This answers the obstacles of hydroponics being portrayed as requiring an expensive startup cost, having dedicated or expansive space for hydroponic growing, require special or complex equipment, or special knowledge and skills.

AND IT'S ADHD FRIENDLY!!!!

  • Start growing whenever you get around to it. Doesn't require following growing seasons.
  • Once you start growing, you can forget about it until it's done growing.

Note: This is an experiment. I don't know if this will succeed. But! I plan on tweaking it and correcting any issues as I test it out. So... I'm not showing you a finished product. I'm showing you the design and test phase. Maybe we'll get a finished product out of the end of it!

(Thread continues and will be added onto. Bookmark and check back every couple of weeks. - The next section will go into how to build this.)

There was recently a poll asking the ages of Fediverse citizens that bundled everyone over 40. And yes, we are a more grown crowd here.

But there was a poll a couple months back that had more gradations, and the response was heavily Gen X.

I don't think this is a coincidence. We're the generation, so a self-structured social media experience probably suits us better. The joke that it's "Amish Twitter" is apt for that reason.

I'm particularly proud of this. I crammed a mITX motherboard (5600G, 16GB RAM, 1TB NVMe) and a 650W SFX PSU into an old Samsung BT-120AT portable TV. I also managed to find a 5.6" 4:3 LCD to replace the original B&W CRT, and a circular LCD that perfectly fit the window for the AM/FM tuner. I have USB, HDMI, and C13 ports on a custom-made carbon fiber insert.

I have a few finishing touches I'd like to sort out: better power button, a screen to go behind the VHF/UHF tuner window, maybe a way to use the knobs for something (they're just held in place with hot glue at the moment). I also need to figure out how to talk to the circular LCD on the top, which I'll likely use to display system performance metrics. Still very happy with the progress so far!

It's running Mint, and it's going to serve as our entertainment center (I'll install some emulators, stepmania, maybe a few modern-ish Steam games). Right now it's just connected to our local Jellyfin server.

A Samsung portable TV viewed from the front. The original CRT display has been removed, and replaced with a color LCD display. The display is showing the output from bashtop, a command-line based resource monitor for Linux systems.
Front/top view of an old portable Samsung TV. There are two holes where the old controls have been removed. The AM/FM tuner window now contains a small cirxular LCD which is still showing it's default message "This is your world, be creative". The Samsung logo is clearly visible here.
A wide shot of a large LCD TV, with the Samsung portable TV sitting on the entertainment center between an old laptop and a PS4. Two small speakers flank the other electronics. On the TV is an image from the 1978 animated Lord of the Rings movie.

so apparently cisgender, heteronormative Zillennial women haven’t had their moment in the sun until 2023 & the movie.

of particular interest to me is this one image they added to the article as proof of how girly fashion is inherently an act of rebellion.

given the ugly & conservative, only your evangelical aunty would wear, clothes hawked to Zillenials, it’s not shocking they feel this way.

USA needs a DIY revival.

think of UK’s vs USA’s .

in spite of , UK is still a European country that holds on dearly to their as a cultural expression.

in USA, fashion became the anchor of consumerist capitalism. there are no sewists, only fashion designers. clothes are for capitalist profit, not for personal expression.

to kill consumerism we need a DIY revival that values personal craft over capitalist profit.

kill fashion to save the earth.
