I came across this petition.

It is calling upon the House of Commons to extend to and people - the right to claim asylum in by reason of eliminationist laws in their home countries, whatever country that may be.

Amazing fact almost 160,000 people have signed so far.

Only 16,000 shy of being the 2nd most signed petition...EVER!

Closes May 26.

Can someone from mstdn.ca please boost?

this past year alone, my family has faced evacuation twice in the north due to . during the current evac, thousands of northerners have zero communication with their families, emergency personnel or access to wildfire data.

this is entirely due to the collapse of NorthwesTel's fibre network infrastructure and zero secondary systems for comms. the sub/arctic is infamous for its fragile, ancient comms architecture.

i want to change that, and i'd like help thinking out loud about potential citizen-owned/operated technologies for long-distance emergency comms.

and enthusiasts - could you please recommend some research resources on the following:

  • legal/frequency considerations for non-voice/packet transmission specific to
  • recommended hardware & software for 1000km+ transmission, tcp/ip
  • examples of amateur radio clubs that have undertaken this kind of role before

if possible, please respond with links to documentation, research and/or policy papers.

my entire family has worked wildfire management since the teletype days, and i hopefully can effect some actual useful change for northerners here.

I really enjoy creating these abstract landscapes...for this one I tried to evoke the mood of a coastal sunset in my home province of British Columbia.

As wildfires burn, Premier Danielle Smith is doing an event with Alex Epstein, the activist who says climate is "Not a Crisis".

The conference wraps up with “a fun Mardi Gras-themed costume party,”

Bloc, NDP & Liberals passed every single bill. When the Cons get ratioed that badly you know they are not in politics for Canadians."

Shortly after his comment he voted AGAINST the Liberal's National Food Program for Kids.

"Police and public officials have been remarkably tolerant of the demonstrators who have periodically occupied Avenue Road at Highway 401 in to protest the government’s attacks in against .

They weren’t protesting in front of the Israeli consulate, some nine kilometres to the south, or at a familiar gathering place such as Nathan Phillips Square at City Hall. They chose to make themselves seen and heard in a prominent - neighbourhood.

This is not protest. This is intimidation.

There is a video circulating on X, the former Twitter, in which a woman at what appears to be the Avenue Road protest tells Jews to “go back to Poland, go back to Russia, go back to Ukraine.” Others offer similar remarks. This is not free speech. This is hate speech.

Someone vandalized and set fire to a Jewish delicatessen in Toronto on Wednesday. This is not just a crime. This is a hate crime."

Has anyone heard yet which staffer Doug’s going to blame for passing ? 😈

Apparently this latest screwup has cost taxpayers far more than paying nurses fair wages would have cost us in the first place.

Mind you, the owners of private nursing agencies have done rather well financially - so maybe that was the whole point? /s

gemelliz,
@gemelliz@mstdn.ca avatar

"obscene & shocking greed"

A rare look inside one of the private nursing agencies plundering our public healthcare system.

Health Labs billed taxpayers $1.6M for meals for nurses who paid for their own food, fees up to $300/hr per nurse, staff cab rides, nurse certification classes, furniture, pet transport and, in one case, an air fryer. 🤔

Massive staffing crisis = a "level of desperation that agency companies thrive on."
