The big news in search this week is that Google is continuing its transition to "AI search" - instead of typing in search terms and getting links to websites, you'll ask Google a question and an AI will compose an answer based on things it finds on the web:
If you'd like an essay-formatted version of this thread to read or share, here's a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
Trying something new, everyone is guaranteed an interview! Open interviews! For a limited time no one will be skipped (except for clear cases of abuse).
So we still have about 10 more 100% remote positions to hire for full-time market-fair positions here at QOTO/CleverThis.
100% remote, work from anywhere, even the beach, market-fair offers. Ethics first, we treat our people like family.
We have an urgent need for Machine learning experts with a background in NLP and Deep Learning (Natural Language Processing and Neural Networks). There is a focus on Knowledge Graphs, Mathematics, Java, C, looking for Polyglots.
We are an open-source first company, we give back heavily to the OSS community.
We need everything from jr to sr, data scientist to programmer. If your IT and your good, you might be a fit.
I will personally be both your direct boss, and hiring manager. I am also the founder and inventor.
The NLP position can be found at this link, other positions can be found on the menu bar on the left:
If you would like to submit yourself for an interview, which for a limited time I am guaranteeing you will get a first stage interview, then you can submit your application here, and even schedule your interview as you apply, instantly!
Having an AI ("Windows Recall" is enabled by default) that tracks every move you do on your computer and of course has no filter (Microsoft's own FAQ clearly states it will remember every password you type) is idiotic. But Tech bros are frothing at the mouth for anything AI so here we are.
A lot of people are finding LLMs more useful than Google search.
I think a huge part of that is that Google and web in general has massively deteriorated in terms of finding clear, concise answers. Even if you can find it, it's covered in ads, cookie popups and so on.
But LLMs will inevitably follow the same path - investors want their returns. And the complete non transparency of LLMs will make it even worse this time around. Is that really the best answer or is it sponsored?
"it's all stored locally" is not a panacea for these alarming privacy-invading products!
what exactly is stored locally? what data is extracted from that local data and sent to the company's servers? is that local data being backed somewhere?
"To develop AI/ML models, our systems analyse Customer Data (e.g. messages, content and files) submitted to Slack as well as Other Information (including usage information) as defined in our privacy policy and in your customer agreement."
This is anecdotal, but I now personally know two employees of #AI-related companies whose valuations have imploded within the past month, and they are now looking to bail. One company lost 73% of their (publicly traded) value in a month. The other one is a startup whose founder (according to my friend) has “finally snapped”, and the company is now in freefall.
»New Windows AI feature records everything you’ve done on your PC - Recall uses AI features "to take images of your active screen every few seconds."« 🤦♂️
Google Gemini now has extensions that can for example use the content of your Gmail inbox, very practical but also very scary from a security/privacy perspective. #googlegemini#AI#extensies#security#privacy

AI Laptop REACTIONS! https://somegadgetguy.com/b/45Q
Checking out all the announcements today from Dell, HP, Microsoft, Samsung, Acer, Asus, and Lenovo! I did a live recording of my reactions.
Windows on ARM is getting REALLY exciting! Here are some things to look out for while shopping a new "AI" laptop!
User: Make simple python application using pygame. Let it opens in the center of the screen, be 512x512 in size and have a hearth icon/shape inside that changes size in hearthbeat fashion.
It works! Looks like Sci-Fi when it does each step just as any other junior programmer. Runs code, checks errors, adds graphics (almost hearth) and in the end even creates venv for this project.
