Remember to include little human touches in your work so that it breathes. Random bits of humour. Rude or angry graffiti. Kids playing with a rock.

I’m not above this shameless plug:

I know many are recommending many Indigenous books for folks to support and learn more about the community.

Consider purchasing those books through an Indigenous bookstore such as my own instead of the huge corporation. (Libraries are a great option too!)

Never thought I’d need to say this, but:
When designing book covers, be aware that a lot of teens and young adults can no longer read cursive. It’s no longer taught in a lot of US schools. I just showed a cool cover to some college students and was shocked that they couldn’t read the title.

Writing is just thinking your work is amazing and then thinking it’s terrible and going back and forth between both extremes until you finally have to submit, at which point you’ve spent so much time staring at the words that you have no idea if any of it is good or bad at all

Where is my ? Trying to find a new home to learn about where to submit, and where I can read others' work. We're in this together.

I didn't see this option until after I posted. I will do up a better introduction soon :)

In 1963, in a bid to settle a conflict with his English teacher, a 16yo student from San Diego sent a 4-question survey to 150 well-known authors or commercial, literary and science fiction.

"Did they consciously plant symbols in their work?" he asked.

Here are many of their wonderful answers, very much worth the read

The novel I’m currently writing has a main character who works in a small family-run bakery. I’m having the hardest time finding good sources for what the day-to-day routines and realities of that job are actually like. If anyone has links, I would love to read memoirs, articles, blogs, etc.

I'm seeing a lot of people selling advice for writers--plot structure, how to get published, how to self publish, etc--and it mostly looks like a huge scam, a way to get you to give them money that will not put you one inch closer to your goal.

Truth is, it's an industry that might decide it can make money off you, and talent/skill == success.

Just, you know, beware.

Which reminded me: I don't think I've posted here yet that I have a new workshop next month all about writing science fiction when you didn't study science!

Not that I'm an expert. It's offered very much in the spirit of sharing what I learn as I go, and offering a supportive space to try something new 🤖👽🛸🚀🪐
