So far I am totally impressed with #Mastodon ‘s ability to relay real time news on #Russia events. I checked the bird site as a comparison, and it’s miles behind because they don’t display posts chronologically and boost subscriber posts, which tend to be old. Yay #Mastodon !

Saturday - 11:30 p.m. Update: Per the Hoover Police Department, the Hoover 911 center received a call at 10:45 p.m. that Carlee Russell had returned home to her residence. Hoover Police and Fire responded to the scene to evaluate Carlee and transported her to a local hospital for more evaluation. More details will be provided when they become available.
Unlike #Twitter, this place isn’t set up as a race for RTs & likes & feels more like an ongoing conversation. Engagement is high & on the whole, there’s less outrage & more thoughtful content. I’ve been enjoying the chance to get to meet interesting new folks.

I should add that on #Mastodon, it's very helpful to use hashtags.
I tend to include #science & #history in my posts, but I've also created hashtags to keep related posts easily accessible.
For example, #HistoryRemix is a series highlighting diverse pioneers in science & the arts. #SharedPlanet is all about the biodiversity of life on Earth.

As many of you know, the third party iPhone/iPad app Metatext is no longer being maintained as the lead developer had health issues. However, there is now a community-maintained version of the app called Feditext. You can follow the latest news about it at:

and we support more than just Mastodon: Feditext also works with extended Mastodon APIs in forks like Glitch, and Mastodon-compatible APIs in GotoSocial, Firefish, and Akkoma, including features such as emoji reactions. in the future, we plan to support rich text post authoring, local-only posts, and native quote posts whenever the user's instance does.

@iuculano yup. At best, this just pushes the Twitter problems a little into the future before they manifest on Threads, at worst (and more likely) this results in Meta introducing us to a brand new level of dysfunction thanks to expanded data mining.

At the bottom it shows the number of boosts. Click on the icon and you’ll get a list of others that have boosted the post. Same with favorite icon. Ta-dah!

On that story about scientists leaving X and coming here. Please, please lean into the feature of hashtag following and tag your stuff. A lot of us would love to find you and hashtag discovery is the easiest way here.
If you are annoyed by people who boost too much (like me 😁 ), you need not mute them! Just go to their profile and choose behind the 3 dots "hide boosts from @ xy". This is also the easiest way to get only original posts by a followee.

In the Blue Place, it felt like we were all competing for attention. Here, it’s more like we’re cooperating for attention.
At one level, that doesn’t make sense—everyone still has only so much attention to spend. But it feels better, and without The Algorithm enforcing power law, winner-take-all dynamics, the boost culture does seem to lift a lot of voices that were drowned out over there.
@maxleibman Until people get overwhelmed, giving attention to any little thing that piques your interest just pushes you, a unique person with your unique interests, forward. If other people think it's cool, more people see it.
Unless it's sports, because no one here appears to do sports.
@maxleibman Maybe we do actually have more attention to spend, with bad actors booted into the abyss and without the aggressive algorithmic spamming. Resulting in more time for quality content and genuine human connection.

I’m more frequently seeing new accounts show up that are arguing for only one thing, repeatedly. Remember the large scale disinfo campaigns on Twitter made to look like real people from real places and with real lives? I think they’ve discovered #Mastodon.
So, a friendly reminder not to believe everything you read on here. Check out the person’s bio and timeline before buying their story - especially if you find yourself nodding in agreement. We can be better than Musk’s rat palace.
@KatM ive learned to ignore comments from low effort, low investment, unaged, unengaged, commodity, single topic fediverse accounts. Theyre not difficult to spot.
So get this... after I posted this 👆 today, I started getting followed by a bunch of accounts that launched this week and have 0 followers/0 following with 0 info on their profiles. No avatar. Just ghost accounts. 👻
"#Mastodon is failing" so hard that #Fediverse just crossed 4mln monthly active accounts (based on the-federation.info). :blobcatgiggle:
This is already slightly more than Nov and Dec #TwitterMigration waves' peaks. And it is still going up.
What I find particularly important is that it seems like a lot of this is not new accounts, but people returning to accounts created before and then left unused.
I expect this to be a more resilient kind of growth. Less of a drop after it peaks.

@Em0nM4stodon similar to what Yellow Flag said, but i appreciate how mastodon websites only load what is actually required to function as a social media unlike twitter.
there are no ads or trackers that do unnecessary requests that cost data and take up cpu.
there are no ads that force you to load high quality images for stuff that you're not even interested in.
also i like the accessibility features.
not because i am blind, but because i sometimes don't understand what i am looking at so i can hover over the image and it tells me for example what the software in the screenshot is called
though there is one gripe that i have about it.
unlike twitter, you specifically need to click the reply button even if you're viewing the post directly
Can we please have a setting in the administrator panel to set the character limit for a Mastodon instance?
The current lack of such a setting does nothing apart from create a two-tier fediverse where folks who have the time to maintain their own Mastodon fork and folks who use other ActivityPub servers can write as much as they like whereas everyone else is limited to 500 characters. We’re not kids; make the option accessible and let instance owners decide for themselves.
