Today I discovered that not only is July #Disability Pride Month but also that we have a flag. It is so well done and extremely meaningful. It was created by Ann Magill, a disabled writer.
The entire thing will not fit into the thumbnail but if you open the image, it will tell you what each color and flag feature stands for. It is also in the alt text if you are unable to open it.
So our landlord has told us he plans to put our house on the market next spring/summer. It's been a great six years and I bloody love living in #fife but the hunt for the next house suitable for (now) three long term #disabled people begins.
If anyone knows of organisations in #scotland that can help our family find a house we can feel safe & settled in I'd really appreciate it. Boosts to escape my little bubble on here would also help. #housing#PrivateRent
Hello, I'm here to seek out a community of other #Disabled people and accomplices.
I'm working to build a non-profit tool to make alt text easier, and I want to connect with folks who can help guide that project toward a useful start.
I've built a proof of concept, but getting it further will take building community. I'm #Autistic, and networking does not come easy to me. Boosting this is an immense help.
If you have #SocialMedia and #marketting experience and are looking for #remote work, the #nonprofit I work for is looking for someone, contract to start. Preference given to someone #disabled in some way. I'd love to have someone take this that's familiar with Mastodon.
I ordered a device called a BT Speak about a week ago. It is a PDA-like device, with an 8-dot Perkins style Braille keyboard and speech output for the visually impaired.
When I got the device, it did not boot, and I contacted the company about it.
I was able to get the device working again by myself rather quickly, however here in lies the reason for my post.
The company were so quick to respond that a replacement unit is already on the way.
After some discussion, what has been decided is that I will be donating the replacement device, brand new, to a visually impaired child who may not be able to procure assistive technology via other means.

I do not actually know many parents of visually impaired children in the UK. So, I would be very appreciative if one of you kind souls would point me in the right direction to find someone who could make use of it.
The device usually retails for £1400, not including VAT and import fees, all of which shall be paid for.
If you do not know anyone, then boosts for reach would also be appreciated.
Thank you all for your assistance with keeping our young visually impaired children learning Braille. #blind#fedi#mastodon#UK#disabled#donation#AT

I used to have a long pinned post about how I got disabled, but I'll sum it up in under 500:
I grew up with a too-strong work ethic, I let my employers push me beyond what my fit-but-not-young body could handle, I got injured on the job, WSIB denied me twice, now I'm 9 yrs #ChronicPain, 3 yrs #Disabled, 3 yrs #ChronicAnxiety, I don't leave the house much, and everyday that I can get out of bed I consider myself very lucky.
Learn from my mistakes...they don't give a shit about you
Western Cree & French settler ancestry living in Canada. Also a partial hand #amputee An ability I call my super power.
My blog timeline will be #indigenous related. Various tidbits of life here and there. Mainly a lighthearted escape. I enjoy sharing people's creativity and expression.
So yesterday, I got my first wheelchair as a result of complications from long covid (primarily chronic fatigue and breathlessness from walking). It's made a huge difference for me so far even after just one day - previously I wouldn't have been able to walk more than a few minutes without having to stop and rest for twice as long whilst I catch my breath, but yesterday I was out with a friend for FIVE HOURS, and not once did I lose my breath or feel any extra fatigue! I'm so glad I finally stopped trying to just struggle through it and decided to get the chair, as it's making such a positive impact.
To other wheelchair users out there in the Fediverse: I'd be grateful for any advice you're able to offer me as a new wheelchair user. Anything that you think would be helpful to know would be very gratefully received!
The horrible things we as disabled people are pushed through "because we're able to" do them, is incredibly concerning.
It so often pushes us into survival mode, where getting through the thing is our only focus, and it DEEPLY damages our health and wellbeing in the process.
We deserve the accommodations we need to actually live, not just survive, and as far as possible, thrive and be happy.
If you're not physically #disabled, with mobility issues & have friends who are, please try to keep these things in mind, before you take us out anywhere.
is parking close to where trail starts
bathrooms - are there any available & are they accessible?
A short walk for you may mean a long one for us. Please don't say, it's around the corner - if it's not because we have to know distances & elevation changes to gauge if we can do it or not
Hey everyone! I’m Ellie, a visually impaired queer actor based in Brighton, UK. I’m really passionate about authentic representation of disability on-screen and uplifting the voices of other disabled actors/creatives. If you’re queer and/or disabled, I’d love to chat! I love feeling represented/seen and I hope I can help others to feel the same.
Also, Mastodon is overwhelming so bear with me while I figure it all out.
Several of them will be done in a chair. Some standing & others are laying down. I don't see many exercise vids made by & for #disabled folks available online. I got frustrated, trying to find exercise vids, made by fellow disabled folks.
So, I'm going to stop complaining about lack of them. I'll start to create them, myself.
“I have disabled #students participating in the peaceful encampment/protests #UConn. When cops arrived they put hands on one of my disabled students & dislocated their shoulder. This student is still there, but injured. If UConn says there are no injuries, that is a lie …. this student wants this known and I am sharing with permission”
