Back in Feb, when Grammarly said they were going to think about incorporating AI, I immediately canceled my account and uninstalled. And now they've actually done it.

I'm sharing because with everything going on, writers might not realize this is happening.

Hey there Mastodonians.

Last week I lost my for the 3rd time in 2023: once to a bankruptcy, once to a toxic CEO, and last week due to an re-org by a parent company that eliminated my position.

Background in and fiction writing (MFA in creative ). Can you pass this around and reply if you have any job leads? I have 0 runway left at this point.

Edit: USA northeast/remote work please!

Edit 2: Portfolio, AKA my author page: https://pleasefeedthesquirrels.com/

I would like to enjoy mastodon but sadly my feed is dismal….. if you research, post about, or love, and not limited too, #R or please say and I will follow you!

Once upon a time, there was a community called Little Details on LiveJournal. It was a place where fiction writers of all kinds could ask for help with their fact-checking and research. It was a huge, amazing resource before the collapse of LiveJournal took it down.

I recently decided to try resurrecting it on Dreamwidth. It's now open and ready for questions. Come check it out, and boost if you're so inclined!

I'm hearing chatter that Grammarly has just admitted to using its users' work to train an AI--without consent. That means it's been stealing/scraping your work and writing, without compensation.

If you use that particular service, you might want to look into that.

Remember to include little human touches in your work so that it breathes. Random bits of humour. Rude or angry graffiti. Kids playing with a rock.

The struggle is real.

esther, to writing

If you actually want people to read long-form stuff you write, don’t put it on Medium. Just don’t.

There’s a whole bunch of alternatives, like these WriteFreely instances that are part of the Fediverse (the network that Mastodon also in a part of)

https://writefreely.org/instances

There’s also WordPress.com which has a pretty good free tier. https://wordpress.com/

There’s GitHub Pages which works pretty well too, if you don’t mind a little technical involvement. https://docs.github.com/en/pages/quickstart

There’s tons of affordable paid providers too. You get a lot for the cost of one bubble tea per month.

And of course there’s the option to run your own site, which is probably easier and cheaper than you think. It’s worth giving it some thought.

But whatever you do: definitely keep a copy of your writing in a place you control, even if it’s just a bunch of text files. You never known when or for what you’ll need it.

Hey I'm Alicia, an artist who really hasn't been feeling social media lately (especially IG and FB) so I thought I'd try Mastodon out and see if I like the simplicity of it more. I think I picked the perfect server, since I'm much more likely to be in my sunny garden than anywhere else. :BlobCat_Love: 🌞

My interests include
#art #wool #dyeing #watercolor #flowarts #gardening #cats #dogs #reptiles #languagelearning #writing #reading and #mandala making.

I have a family business called Fibre2Fabric where we dye all sorts of fibre, yarn, and fabric and I want to get into #upcycling clothes some more!

Hope I get to meet some cool people the algorithm would drown out on other apps.

My biggest tip for people who have published stuff online is to take a snapshot of it with the Wayback Machine.

You can do that by pasting this in front of the URL:
https://web.archive.org/save/
(takes a minute)

By doing this, you'll be able to access the snapshot even if (when) the site shuts down.

April 12: The entire team of lexicographers at Dictionary.com gets laid off.

Of the 58,000+ books published per year:

  • 90% will sell fewer than 2,000 copies
  • 50% will sell FEWER THAN A DOZEN COPIES

Great, very readable piece on book publishing and how it's very much like being a VC...
