Here's an interesting fact. I've been on since August 2023. I have 300 posts over there, almost all of which are related to science. I only have 29/30 followers there. By contrast, I've been on for only a few days, have posted 37 times, and already have 47 followers. Either I'm terrible at communication, or Bluesky is a dead undiscoverable platform. Or maybe both. Could be an algorithmic issue, or it could be that Bsky has the worst search engine (plus no hashtags).

I've been on for only a few days and I already feel less anxiety/stress over here than on twitter/X. I love the fact that both Mastodon and are overall leftist/left-wing. I'm so glad the future of social media is decentralized (e.g. , ATProto, Nostr, etc.).

Twitter was never a healthy place with all its silly algorithms and encouragement of confrontations. I don't know which platform US society mostly resembles, but I hope it eventually resembles Mastodon, etc.

On , a biologist can post something about biology and get engagements from non-biologists. Their post could also trend for the day and be widely received by people of all different walks of life. On Bluesky this CANNOT possibly happen. Everyone is in their own closed-membership algorithmic bubble/feed where only the same large accounts are amplified. You can't break through these barriers. It's a rerun of what led to twitter's demise. It's not "new " at all.

I spent a week on doing a social experiment. It was an exercise in depression. is the best new , by far. On Bsky, nobody uses the search function or hashtags like to discover posts. You're stuck to one science feed that's a closed-membership algorithmic coffin that only boosts large long-established accounts. It felt like I was in solitary confinement. You're forced to play the "social ladder" game, which encourages twitter-style toxicity.

By his own logic, Russia and Ukraine should both be part of Iran because the ancient Scythians (an Iranic people) lived there thousands of years ago, long before the arrival of the Slavic peoples.

This is exactly why I hope we erase natl borders one day and become one global federation. This planet doesn't belong to anyone. We're just guests here.

I love that this place is overall left-leaning, albeit there is a bit of cognitive dissonance with respect to some users who appear left-leaning until, Allah/God forbid, you mention .

I was actually surprised to find out that DuckDuckGo churned out way better search results. I'm definitely gonna use it instead of Google from now on.

And unlike twitter/X, I don't need to worry about getting stalked and harassed by regime-paid Saudis, Turks and Azerbaijanis who hate my critical views about their dictatorial countries. A terrorist attack carried out by ISIS resulted in the killing of at least 30 civilians in Pakistan's Balochistan province. Balochistan is a region that stretches from southwest Pakistan all the way to southeast Iran. My father's ancestors were from Iranian Balochistan (hence "Al-Belushi"). For decades, Pakistan has propped up terrorist groups like the Taliban in Afghanistan. The shortsighted policy was bound to backfire. Turkey should take note. Sigh...

My dream is to see a detailed, multi-pixel image of an exoplanet in my lifetime. A Solar Gravity Lens telescope could achieve that. If only America/NASA would finance such a project. An SGL telescope would be situated somewhere near the edge of the solar system, specifically where an Einstein ring is formed around the sun. This ring could be deconstructed to recover images of distant celestial bodies/exoplanets.

Has anyone else noticed that racialists tend to draw false parallels between DNA/genes & computer code/programs? They're not the same. They mistakenly see genes/DNA as fatalistic or strongly deterministic. There's no gene for becoming a musician. We're not "commanded" to do anything.

    A few articles/papers I highly recommend reading:

I cannot overstate how dangerous it is to compare DNA/genes to computer code/programs, especially since the comparison is wrong (and is used by racialists).

Your DNA doesn't carry specific instructions. It's more like a recipe list. Almost all physical and behavioral traits are either moderately or weakly determined by genes---not strongly. We're not commanded to carry out specific actions either, nor are we programmed to execute certain tasks.

    Ever heard of terminal tourism?

I consider myself a terminal tourist lol. Basically, it's when people hang out at airport terminals even if they're not traveling. I used to do that a lot in Malta during my med school years. Used to spend hours at the observation deck, and would sometimes even eat and study there. Also used to do it a lot in Qatar. Apparently it has become a thing in America too. I used to think I was the only one who did this. 😅
