Really, really, really still trying to find My People here on Mastodon. Am I on the wrong server or something? I'm a self-employed #artist / #maker / #writer ... I make #ceramics ( #pottery )... dye #yarn ... #knit ... read #sciencefiction ... have two #dogs and eleven #cats ... am a recent #widow who loves to talk about what a wild ride #grief is ... and I'm a #Floridian scared shitless for my #BiPOC and #lgbtqia friends and family. Is that enough tags? Hello? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
I would appreciate it if people could help me get more federated on my new instance. Please boost this post if any of the following tags apply to you so I can follow!
One problem with leaving the birdsite is that I had built up a reasonable list of illustrators to follow there, and I really haven't here. But I bet they're around. If you're a #fantasy or #sciencefiction or #comedy#illustrator, especially if you're interested in commissions from an author, give this post a like so I can check out your work. Or recommend me someone in the comments. Or boost this so more people see it. Or just tell me what good hashtags I should be following. #illustration#sff
🌌 On this day in 1978 the very first episode of the very first version of Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy went out on Radio 4. We can't tell you how proud that makes us.
Here's a lovely programme about Douglas and his creation, presented by his friend John Lloyd, that went out on the 40th anniversary.
#introduction: Hi I’m Farah. I’m originally from a small South Asian country; now live in Iowa, USA. I talk about my hobbies, #books, #gaming, #sciencefiction and #StarTrek and other isssues like #mentalheaIth#science#psychology. Occasionally I’ll talk about #USpolitics. I complain about the world a lot. I am pathologically anxious and make jokes to compensate, they aren’t always funny. Trying to connect with people because it’s hard to make friends in real life. Peace! 🖖🏼
“I didn’t make up the problems. All I did was look around at the problems we’re neglecting now and give them about 30 years to grow into full-fledged disasters.“
— Octavia E. Butler, who would've been 76 today, on not being a prophet
It's award nomination season! For your consideration, the best two things I published this year: The Terraformers, a novel, and "Unhearable Music," a short story which appeared in Rolling Stone's "future of music" issue. Thanks to all the kind people who supported me by publishing these strange stories about future ecologies, and mega-gratitude to my readers, who made The Terraformers a success.
“Hope begins with the ability to imagine alternatives. And there is always an alternative.” - part of a brilliant graduation address by Cory Doctorow ( @pluralistic ) to York University.
A great piece about science fiction, optimism, pessimism, fatalism, humane agency, Luddites, tech bros, inevitability, and the need to always seek alternatives… and to find hope.
For those of you with your #headinyourhands about the stalled 'negotiations' to allow the UK to (re)enter the EU's #Horizon#research programme.... here's something to brighten your evening; @tomgauld on mixing up your research proposal & your book manuscript.

I need your help #bookstodon. One of the classes I'm taking at the graduate level this semester is Religion & Science Fiction. I read more fantasy, and would like to do my research paper on something that's not obvious (like ST/BS5/Matrix/etc.) & I'd love to use more modern sf rather than the golden age classics.
Anyone have any interesting ideas for my research paper on regarding the intersection of religion and science fiction?
Worldcon 2023 took place in Chengdu, PRC. We now find out there was tampering w/ the Hugo #awards: people & works declared ineligible w/o explanation or informing those affected, post-explained as obeying local laws. Those who raised this as a concern at the discussion of the venue bids were dismissed as racists. PRC rates among the worst authoritarian regimes in all watchlists; its bid should have been rejected or have provisos.
