A certain stage of development has ended - a prototype was created that allowed me to verify whether such a form makes sense in the #fediverse. Until now, it was a project that I developed in my free time. Now, thanks to the great people from Nlnet, I will be able to devote much more time to it. This time, we have already...
@auschwitzmuseum I would also like to suggest that you temporarily cease the feed of Holocaust victims from the previous century and begin broadcasting the names, photos, and stories of Holocaust victims from Simhat Torah
Your organization has no other purpose than to prevent the horrors which Israel experienced on Simhat Torah. Now that you have failed in that - now that we have all failed in that - the least you can do is support the war effort with every resource you have.
I had been having trouble getting meaningful results from the fediverse on Google, and after seeing this post, it seems I'm not the only one. So, I created a site that helps search the fediverse in your search engine of choice (it currently supports Google, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, and Dogpile)....
@erlend I hope GitLab will manage to do everything they’re planning to join Fediverse. After that GitHub would need to hustle up do the same. I will help them with the roadmap:
A lot of us are pretty new to the fediverse and we've arrived just in time to grapple with what is easily the biggest federation/defederation controversy ever to hit it. I've put this thread together to hopefully help communicate some of the more complex ideas that we're trying to get our heads around....
I discovered yesterday evening that Lemmy.ml is blocking all inbound ActivityPub requests from /kbin instances. Specifically, a 403 'access denied' is returned when the user agent contains "kbinBot" anywhere in the string. This has been causing a cascade of failures with federation for many server owners, flooding the message...
I don't think most people realize just how important that distinction is.
Open, non-product protocols are the whole entire reason why the Internet succeeded, and proprietary networking solutions like IPX/SPX and DECnet didn't.
It's also what brought us successful Internet applications like email, IRC, and the web, and it's the reason Gopher failed.
Now we just need to send commercial social media platforms like X and Discord to the dustbin of history where they belong.
Do I know anyone here who is willing to share their experience deploying an institutional Mastodon server? A contact of mine is looking for someone to discuss the experience as he works on getting a government agency to deploy their own instance. Boosts appreciated #fediverse#mastodon
@Drbruced Universities may be a special case but @uniinnsbruck just went public with their server and I suspect they are happy to share their experience.
I just want to say for my first post to the #Fediverse that I've already seen more #alttext in the last couple of days than I've literally seen in my entire life. I don't know what it is, but as a blind user it's making me emotional to be able to actually interact with content. Think I'll write an introduction soon. #accessibility#Mastodon#redditMigration
For anyone who's come over to the #Fediverse from #Twitter: One of the first things I did when coming here was seek out a bunch of #journalists to follow, so my TL could mimic the "current events" feed. Here's a curated Google Sheet listing over a thousand journalists who've made accounts over here, who cover all sorts of things from cycling to sports to breaking news. Use it to help populate your #timeline, #share broadly for exposure.
@colemankane There over 1300 names on that spreadsheet. I started to wade in, quite enthused ... I followed three and then realized that two of them are inactive here. It's a good resource, but would require a fair amount of time to select journalists of interest and then check for inactivity (all done within Masto's two-step foreign-follow process).
MakerTube is now open for public registrations! It's a #peertube video instance for makers, musician, artists and DIY content creators. If you thought of trying out a video platform besides big corp now is the time!
Join in https://makertube.net or any other instance and let's make peertube a place as great as Mastodon.
Please boost this post! Share your creations! Let's build alternatives that stay!
@claudius I'm going to enable live streams at some point, but it's not really on my priority list. Thanks for pointing out the broken links, I'll check.
Hello Fediverse. I'm posting this tonight from my federated Flipboard profile! We're now testing our #ActivityPub integration starting with my account. You can follow me here to see all the stories I'm curating about things like startups, photography and of course, the #Fediverse. Curious to hear your thoughts on how this is working. We’ll incorporate your feedback as we make more progress on federating Flipboard. Stay tuned for lots more soon.
@evan@mike thanks for helping to make this happen through your work on #ActivityPub. This standard is well on its way to making the online world better by bringing us all back to the promise of interoperability. The implementation was a bit easier than we expected and well worth the effort. I highly recommend federation for any product with a social graph.
I am once again encouraging #Fediverse#admins to add a clause to prohibit using their server’s data for machine training into their Terms of Use, because at some point in the near future there is likely going to be a lawsuit against some major company for scraping and exploiting users’ data, and we should make sure we have a legal leg to stand on.
@drahardja@seb Meant to respond to your earlier post (a couple weeks ago IIRC) to strongly endorse this suggestion and to encourage developers, especially those of us who offer open APIs, to do the same. (We already have thanks to your suggestion)
@drahardja@seb Hi Dave! This is something the admin team is already working on, along with some other policy updates.
I'll push this to the top of the queue.
We have a lawyer on the team (that's me), so no need to collect money for the updates; I do SFBA work on a pro bono basis.
Way more interesting and healthy fediverse news is happening in the shadows and is barely getting discussed! Discourse has federation between different instances of itself and other #fediverse software such as Mastodon working!
@liaizon Stuff like this will make engaging with new online groups much easier - no need to create a new account for every single place you want to comment at.
I moderate a forum (it uses nodebb) and spam is always a concern, but then the fediverse concept of distributed server moderation and banning entire untrusted servers should help to alleviate that somewhat.
If you're on a centralised platform like Reddit, this is what they can do. Centralised platforms have all-powerful leaders who can do whatever they want, and you have no alternatives if you disagree.
The point of the Fediverse being on lots of servers is that each server's power is limited. If you disagree with one server's actions, you can move.
p.s. Have had lot of people asking similar questions, so here are some answers:
Kbin's website is at https://kbin.pub, they have a flagship server at https://kbin.social. There's no app yet, but you can use Kbin servers through their websites.
The lead developer of Kbin is @ernest, at the moment that's the account to follow for news on the project.
There’s been a lot of speculation around what Threads will be and what it means for Mastodon. We’ve put together some of the most common questions and our responses based on what was launched today.
🚨 BOOST CHALLENGE! 🚨Ok #Fediverse and #Mastodon. If I tell my Canadian Member of Parliament, Gord Johns, that he will get 2000 followers within one week of creating a Mastodon account, will you make that happen?
I want him to be able to say when he stands in the House and presents the #e4769 petition for an official Fediverse server that he himself is the first Canadian MP to be on the Fediverse!
Boost for yes! I am going to show him this post! I'm counting on you, literally! 🔥 🙏 2️⃣ 0️⃣ 0️⃣ 0️⃣ 🙏
@chris He should also know a public presence on non commercial media it is the right thing to do for a public official, regardless of the initial follow count.
And this is not limited to Canadian accounts. As a Member of Parliament of Canada for a major opposition party (he is NDP Critic for Mental Health and Harm Reduction https://www.gordjohns.ca), he participates in international committees and initiatives as well. I want him to know he will be connected to the world just as much as he will be connected to his constiuents and Canadians. #Fediverse#Mastodon#e4769
