People in the oldest stage of life who regularly engage in aerobic activities and strength training exercises perform better on cognitive tests than those who are either sedentary or participate only in aerobic exercise.
Let’s get personal, shall we? I’ve been here a while now, and as I’m feeling quite comfortable at Mastodon, I’d like to share a bit more about myself beyond my passion for the climate and the environment.
To begin with, I’m a male, he/him, hetero, strongly supporting LGBTQ rights. I’m a baby boomer, born at 312 PPM 🌏, a United Statesian, although I lived in Europe (mostly Hungary) for several years, and traveled extensively for work before retiring in 2012. I’ve never been good at sustaining long-term romantic relationships, and I’ve finally settled into comfortable singlehood.
I like to say I’m made of contrasts.
For example, I’m rather funny and quite personable, but I don’t enjoy small talk and I hate parties. I currently live in the Bible Belt, but I’m an outspoken atheist. While I can easily fit into most social situations, I don’t feel comfortable around large groups and prefer being alone most of the time. I live near two huge military bases, but I detest the USA’s militaristic, troop-worshiping culture. I’m almost always cheerful, which masks my deeply felt existential nihilism. I’m a neat freak, but also rather lazy, preferring fun over work.
I’ll finish up with some hashtags to add flavor...
The air is poison today so I wore my mask for my entire workout. I don’t know how firefighters do all that training with respirators on, but I’m possibly gonna find out. I wore a mask while running, biking, doing about 150 walking lunges, a heap of Nordic curls, knee raises, and a bunch of high crossbody box step-ups. I wore a mask yesterday for a 5km cross country hike. Wearing a mask while training is a heck of a handicap. I feel like I’m doing everything while carrying a sandbag. It’s a lot harder for me to regulate my breathing because the fitted piece going over my nose feels like it’s cutting off some of my nasal airways, and I end up sucking wind through my mouth instead. That’s not great for my asthma, but neither is this poison air. I just pace myself as best as I can. #RespiratoryDisease#Asthma#ClimateDiary#MaskUp#CanadaWildfires#Fitness
I will be traveling to volunteer in Ukraine🇺🇦 next week and will have limited time to spread the word about my new Fall 🍁group indoor class in Malden.🏋🏽♂️
🗣️May I ask for 3-5 friends to share this post on your social media and network.

Pretty big #fitness milestone! 100lbs down since August of last year
Only a couple pounds away from my goal weight, then I'm going to start slowly ramping up my calories again and start focusing on #strengthtraining and training for a #halfmarathon this Fall!
Nice 9.2km run this morn after checking, IDing and releasing my mothological visitors overnight.
This one is stumping me and I am 70-30 torn in favour of Oak-tree pug vs Brindled Pug.
Two humans and two AI apps have suggested both, and my own research is inconclusive. But pale marking near the distal spot + wing shape bend me more towards Oak-tree.
Can AI personal trainers motivate you to keep fit this year? BBC technology reporter Katherine Latham delves into what the future of fitness may look like with the technology.
After 13 months I've decided to shut down my single-user Mastodon cluster and join a big server. Sooo, time for a new #introduction!
My name's Chris. I'm a native Texan but I've lived in the United Kingdom for around 29 years.
I'm a proud alumni of #TheOpenUniversity and holder of a BSc in Environmental Management and Technology that I gained mostly for fun.
In those almost 3 decades, I've worked across the entire spectrum of enterprise IT from development to operations and ending up somewhere in between.
I currently run my own limited company as a consultant (freelance) #DevOps / #platform engineer and #cloud architect and I look for contracts focussing on #kubernetes and/or #terraform.
So I just got back from my 3-month check-in with my fitness trainer and I mentioned to her that I'd been really struggling with my reverse crunches. She asked to see them and I showed her.
"Well I know why it's burning so much."
"Am I doing them wrong then?"
"No it's a valid movement it's just 2 steps harder than the one I actually assigned you. Are you a masochist?"
...so yeah my abs aren't ultra-weak I'm just accidentally over-ambitious. As my reward, I get to keep them 💀
Two hotels. Both had Peloton bikes. This was awesome because that means I can workout almost like at home. They have regular pedals with a foot harness which means you really can’t get much upstroke pull but that’s okay. Login is with a QR code and it resets itself when done (except for Bluetooth headsets which you have to remove manually). Very nice unexpected surprise. I hope more places to this. They are way less expensive than traditional gym workout gear they buy. #peloton#travel#fitness
I went to the gym today where I did Nordic curls, goblet squats, kettlebell stuff, and running.
I’m always worried about the running. I used to race regularly, mostly cross country, but also mountain races and obstacle course races. Since hormonal changes knocked me for a loop, running has been extra hard. I have hypermobility, which means that I have to rely on a lot of muscular endurance because my toes and Achilles tendons are loose and floppy. Until I have all those muscles built up, running often results in pain in my toes and along the top of my foot.
I’d really like to be able to run regularly again. I miss being able to do 10km mountain courses. I really really REALLY hope the air quality, temperature, and my health conspire to let me do this again. If I can run again, it’s better for us all. It means the country isn’t on fire again.
