Every day we commemorate the victims & educate about the tragic human history of .

Auschwitz is a place that shows where hatred, antisemitism and contempt for a fellow man led people decades ago.

It is also a place where we should reflect on our individual and collective responsibility for the world we live in.

bp,

@auschwitzmuseum it's the perfect time to clarify that is right now

bp, (edited )

@auschwitzmuseum I would also like to suggest that you temporarily cease the feed of Holocaust victims from the previous century and begin broadcasting the names, photos, and stories of Holocaust victims from Simhat Torah

Your organization has no other purpose than to prevent the horrors which Israel experienced on Simhat Torah. Now that you have failed in that - now that we have all failed in that - the least you can do is support the war effort with every resource you have.

Several years in the making, GitLab is now very actively implementing ! 🙌

https://gitlab.com/groups/gitlab-org/-/epics/11247

The end-goal is to support AP for merge requests (aka pull requests), meaning git.alice.dev can send a merge request to gitlab.com/Bob/project.git

First bite-sized todo on the implementation path there is ‘subscribe to project releases’.

Smart move by ; through ActivityPub they’re getting a distributed version of GitHub’s social layer.

@erlend Also good news is that they're aware of and are considering to implement it for the more forge-specific activities, after getting a baseline of social updates of discussions and activities via AP. https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/issues/21582#note_1470201114

@erlend I hope GitLab will manage to do everything they’re planning to join Fediverse. After that GitHub would need to hustle up do the same. I will help them with the roadmap:

  • Add projects avatars
  • Add release discussions
  • Implement ActivityPub for releases

Why do you like Mastodon (or any open source Fediverse app of your choosing) the most? (You can choose multiple choices)

Boosts appreciated for reach.

@antranigv

I don't think most people realize just how important that distinction is.

Open, non-product protocols are the whole entire reason why the Internet succeeded, and proprietary networking solutions like IPX/SPX and DECnet didn't.

It's also what brought us successful Internet applications like email, IRC, and the web, and it's the reason Gopher failed.

Now we just need to send commercial social media platforms like X and Discord to the dustbin of history where they belong.

Today is John Mastodon Day: On this day one year ago, a journalist misunderstood some facts and created the person of “John Mastodon” of them (https://web.archive.org/web/20221216232836/https://www.mediaite.com/opinion/hypocrisy-and-fear-all-the-way-down-at-twitter). On that day, the Fediverse got a new meme, a patron saint and a running gag at the same time.
Let us all celebrate it!

colemankane,

For anyone who's come over to the from : One of the first things I did when coming here was seek out a bunch of to follow, so my TL could mimic the "current events" feed. Here's a curated Google Sheet listing over a thousand journalists who've made accounts over here, who cover all sorts of things from cycling to sports to breaking news. Use it to help populate your , broadly for exposure.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14vfonxtyy0JFDxu5dZOZo-yAJrRXcu2lZ33atkFb7GM/edit#gid=0

stephenesherman,

@colemankane There over 1300 names on that spreadsheet. I started to wade in, quite enthused ... I followed three and then realized that two of them are inactive here. It's a good resource, but would require a fair amount of time to select journalists of interest and then check for inactivity (all done within Masto's two-step foreign-follow process).

skry,
@skry@mastodon.social avatar

@stephenesherman @colemankane This problem can be solved by following all of them at once: https://mastodon.social/@skry/110646546949221054

This standard is well on its way to making the online world better by bringing us all back to the promise of interoperability. The implementation was a bit easier than we expected and well worth the effort. I highly recommend federation for any product with a social graph.

We just released version 2.0.0 of the plugin for (WordPress.com release is planned for tomorrow).

Main feature: Full bidirectional/threaded comment federation 🎉

Full Changelog: https://github.com/Automattic/wordpress-activitypub/releases/tag/2.0.0

Thanks @mattwiebe @kanru @linos @mediaformat @mat @webrocker @sentynel and @janboddez for your contributions

https://wordpress.org/plugins/activitypub/

nnz,
@nnz@mastodon.social avatar

@pfefferle For me, the integration in both directions still only works sometimes. Today, for example, I had in both directions a missing comment:

https://wolkenstich.wordpress.com/2024/01/12/afd-verbot/#comment-19527 (a comment on Mastodon did not appear on wordpress.com)

https://social.tchncs.de/@York/111748411055828633 (a comment on wordpress.com did not appear on Mastodon)

If this will work some day, it'll be a cool feature, though.

@pfefferle@mastodon.social avatar

@nnz this is because we have not yet released the 2.0.X on WordPress.com yet! I am sorry, but there are still some bugs I have to fix to release it :(

But I think latest next week!

I am once again encouraging to add a clause to prohibit using their server’s data for machine training into their Terms of Use, because at some point in the near future there is likely going to be a lawsuit against some major company for scraping and exploiting users’ data, and we should make sure we have a legal leg to stand on.

Please ask your server’s admin to do this.

@seb please consider doing this. https://mastodon.world/@Chimaera/110652906429977656

DataDrivenMD,
@DataDrivenMD@fedified.com avatar

@drahardja @seb Meant to respond to your earlier post (a couple weeks ago IIRC) to strongly endorse this suggestion and to encourage developers, especially those of us who offer open APIs, to do the same. (We already have thanks to your suggestion)

neuralgraffiti,
@neuralgraffiti@sfba.social avatar

@drahardja @seb Hi Dave! This is something the admin team is already working on, along with some other policy updates.
I'll push this to the top of the queue.

We have a lawyer on the team (that's me), so no need to collect money for the updates; I do SFBA work on a pro bono basis.

Way more interesting and healthy fediverse news is happening in the shadows and is barely getting discussed! Discourse has federation between different instances of itself and other software such as Mastodon working!

@liaizon Stuff like this will make engaging with new online groups much easier - no need to create a new account for every single place you want to comment at.

I moderate a forum (it uses nodebb) and spam is always a concern, but then the fediverse concept of distributed server moderation and banning entire untrusted servers should help to alleviate that somewhat.

🚨 BOOST CHALLENGE! 🚨Ok #Fediverse and #Mastodon. If I tell my Canadian Member of Parliament, Gord Johns, that he will get 2000 followers within one week of creating a Mastodon account, will you make that happen?

I want him to be able to say when he stands in the House and presents the #e4769 petition for an official Fediverse server that he himself is the first Canadian MP to be on the Fediverse!

Boost for yes! I am going to show him this post! I'm counting on you, literally! 🔥 🙏 2️⃣ 0️⃣ 0️⃣ 0️⃣ 🙏

And this is not limited to Canadian accounts. As a Member of Parliament of Canada for a major opposition party (he is NDP Critic for Mental Health and Harm Reduction https://www.gordjohns.ca), he participates in international committees and initiatives as well. I want him to know he will be connected to the world just as much as he will be connected to his constiuents and Canadians.

Apparently Reddit has now banned a subreddit dedicated to the Fediverse Reddit-alternative Kbin:

https://sakurajima.moe/@chikorita157/110517156242412322

If you're on a centralised platform like Reddit, this is what they can do. Centralised platforms have all-powerful leaders who can do whatever they want, and you have no alternatives if you disagree.

The point of the Fediverse being on lots of servers is that each server's power is limited. If you disagree with one server's actions, you can move.

ernest,

@feditips Oh man, that's really funny! :D

p.s. Have had lot of people asking similar questions, so here are some answers:

Kbin's website is at https://kbin.pub, they have a flagship server at https://kbin.social. There's no app yet, but you can use Kbin servers through their websites.

The lead developer of Kbin is @ernest, at the moment that's the account to follow for news on the project.

If you want to help Kbin there's a donation link at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/kbin, and programmers can help at https://codeberg.org/Kbin
