For anyone who's come over to the #Fediverse from #Twitter: One of the first things I did when coming here was seek out a bunch of #journalists to follow, so my TL could mimic the "current events" feed. Here's a curated Google Sheet listing over a thousand journalists who've made accounts over here, who cover all sorts of things from cycling to sports to breaking news. Use it to help populate your #timeline, #share broadly for exposure.
#Twitter was one of the most important tech utilities for #reporters to break stories and deliver #real-time news, until Elon Musk bought the company. He not only killed the #SocialMedia platform, he destroyed one of our most vital #news outlets.
@andreagrimes on how the destruction of the bird app has impacted her and many other independent #journalists.
"Everyone (myself included) who is still on Twitter has some hard questions to ask themselves. There is no pretending any more that Twitter is anything other than a far-right social network headed by a CEO who revels in chaos and is platforming extremism. So why are news organisations still on it? Why is anyone who considers themselves to have liberal values still on it?"
There have been so many "final straws" but I hope that if you still have a personal account on his terrible website, Musk promoting a German political extremist party with literal nazi ties is it. Especially looking at #journalists that for some reason seem to feel like they have to continue to maintain a personal presence there. (I understand that organizations will be the last to go, but individuals - if you have any control at all, delete your :birdsite: account.)
«The Reporter Asked the #Israeli Cops Why They Attacked Him. 'Because You Spoke #Arabic,' They Replied
Security officials have been harassing #journalists who are #Arab citizens of #Israel and are reporting on the #war on behalf of local and foreign #media »
Are you mad about the decline of independent journalism (e.g. Pitchfork!)?!
Mass layoffs at newspapers and magazines?
The disappearance of good, fun and sane things to read??
So are we: 60 writers and artists who've formed a cooperative to bring you FLAMING HYDRA, debuting shortly, $3/month subscription, help us get this thing off the ground!
Today I have been on #Mastodon for exactly a year, having fled the other place in one of the periodic exoduses... but here I have found a much more amenable home.
The engagement is nearly always civil & interesting & when we disagree we can do it through a calm exchange of views.
Unlike the #journalists who slag the #fediverse off I have had no difficulty understanding how this place functions (and I'm no techie).
So, thanks to you all for making this such a great place for conversation(s)!
Proud to have my name listed among those of 500+ journalists from around the world, condemning the cold blooded killings of Palestinian journalists in Gaza. We also condemn the continuous watering down & mischaracterization of Israeli atrocities in Gaza mostly by western media outlets. Journalists have a responsibility to amplify human suffering, whether it's politically convenient or not. Too many are skirting this duty & aren't even subtle about it. #Gaza #Journalists https://www.protect-journalists.com
That's my shorthand for the organizing principle we most need in journalists covering the 2024 campaign. Not who has what chances of winning, but the consequences for American democracy. Not the odds, but the stakes.

This hedge-fund company is buying up US #newspapers, and killing them. They own the Chicago #Tribune, Baltimore Sun, San Jose Mercury News, #DenverPost, San Diego Union-Tribune, various local papers and more. Their days are numbered.
This is a big deal.
Without big news outlets, who covers a wide variety of beats (with #reporters who are specialized in those areas), does investigative reporting, uncover then publicize shady activities, and have a pulse on local shenanigans, and monitor #misinformation?
Smaller, independent papers can't do it -- while they may do a good job, they are generally focused on only 1 or 2 areas.
This article gives a stunning look at what's happening. If you feel the quality of journalism has gone down, things like this is why.
The #IDF has deliberately targeted and killed a Reuters reporter in Southern #Lebanon.
Reporters without borders has filed a criminal complaint at the #ICC (International Criminal Court) on behalf of the 40 #journalists killed during the conflict. Article 79 of the Geneva convention protects journalists.
Louisa Loveluck et al.: Al Jazeera says Israeli strike killed another child of #Gaza bureau chief
"As veteran Palestinian reporter Wael al-Dahdouh lost his wife, several children, and his closest colleague to Israeli airstrikes and shelling, each blow was watched by an audience of millions — in Gaza today, there is little privacy to mourn the dead.
But it was the news Sunday that his son Hamza al-Dahdouh, the one who had followed in his footsteps and become a journalist, had been killed alongside another colleague, Mustafa Thuraya, that cut the deepest.
Hamza, 27, was on assignment for the Al Jazeera news network, where his father is the Gaza bureau chief, when a strike “targeted” the car he was traveling in near the southern city of Rafah, the network said."
Greta Thunberg, Naomi Klein, Fatima Bhutto, Bassem Youssef, W. Kamau Bell, and a whole host of Zeteo contributors pay a very special and unique tribute to #Palestinian#journalists killed by the occupation because profesional associations and mainstream media doesn’t.
#CPJ is investigating all reports of journalists and #media workers killed, injured, or missing in the war, which has led to the deadliest month for journalists since CPJ began gathering data in 1992.
As of November 14, CPJ’s preliminary investigations showed at least 42 #journalists and media workers were among the more than 12,000 killed since the #war began on October 7—with over 11,000 Palestinian deaths in #Gaza and the €WestBank and 1,200 deaths in #Israel.
New call for pitches from journalists for MIT Technology Review's upcoming annual issue on 🖥️🧪breakthroughs🔓😮. We're looking for big swings: narrative features, essential profiles, and sharp reported essays about recent/unfolding breakthroughs.
With the media industry's precarity worse than ever, independent #journalists are increasingly relying on subscription #newsletters But this fragmentation may be making us less #media literate.
